Archie Henderson begins his fourth season as a pro scout with the Red Wings. The former NHL forward has held similar positions with the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals. Henderson is responsible for identifying talent and working with Red Wings management regarding potential free agent acquisitions and trades and is based in the western United States and Canada.
Henderson, 61, played more than 15 professional seasons after originally being drafted by the Capitals. He made NHL stops in Minnesota and Hartford over three stints from 1980-83. The long-time minor leaguer is regarded as one of the toughest of his time, topping 200 penalty minutes seven times before retiring in 1988. The Calgary, Alberta, native's playing career was bookended by stops in Michigan breaking into the International Hockey League with the Port Huron Flags in 1977-78 and skating his final season in the same league with the Saginaw Hawks in 1987-88. The 59-year-old was also a teammate of Red Wings general manager Ken Holland when the pair suited up for the American Hockey League's Binghamton Whalers in 1982-83.

I think he's Director of Player Personnel.

Wtf does that even mean lol

In his role, he leads the amateur draft and works closely with the Assistant General Manager to oversee the Edmonton Oilers scouting operations, continuing to identify and recruit NCAA, CHL and European free agents and develop a free agent priority list.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Oilers would ever have an actual hiring process? For once in their ****ing lives.

The hilarity of it is that Nicholson identified this as an issue with the GM and started a hiring process. And then the minute Holland became available Nicholson just offered him the job.

And the minute a guy Holland played AHL puck with back in the early 80’s becomes available he walks directly into a director of pro scouting job. no wonder Nicholson liked him so much.

On the plus side, pro scouting cannot possibly get any worse, no matter whose homeboy gets hired, so, yay? Hoping he’s a good hire.

Here's a better take: Nicholson searched far and wide to find the best general manager that he could who would be willing to come to this organization, and he decided on Holland after a lengthy interview process involving other candidates. A large part of Holland's appeal would have been the successful organization that he helped to build and maintain, which would indicate that Holland is--at the bare minimum--adequate at gauging how people perform in particular roles.

When upper managers and directors are brought in to a company, they tend to hire people that they already know and believe in. If Holland believes that these two people are good at their jobs, then he's not going to piss around.

Also: it's guaranteed that Yzerman agreed to let Henderson and Wright go so that they could join Holland.

So who logically goes to make room for these guys?

I think the Pro scouts reported to Sutter so now they will report to Henderson. Don't know how good he is because the pro trades were made by Holland in Detroit, but KH seems to think his advice has been reliable so no reason not to think he will be okay. Detroit's drafting doesn't look as good as the Oilers since Wright took over there but their org chart is also a bit confusing so not sure who did the final draft list. Again, Holland selects who he is comfortable with and we can assume his goal is to succeed and not just hire his boys so okay I guess until we know otherwise.
