Offer Sheet Targets

I've never understood why GMs are so gentlemanly in not sending offer sheets to young impact players. An Offer sheet of 5.4 to 7.3m costs a team a 1st 2nd and 3rd. That may seem like a lot, but how many 1sts actually become top line players?

Add that canadian markets always need to pay a little more to attract free agents, so offer sheets somewhat level the playing field.

These players are also able to step in immediately and make an impact, which is key for a team like us who are playoff contenders when healthy.

Worst case scenario the team wil match, and you just made a rival pay more than he would normally have.

So are you for or against offer sheets? Who would you target?

I would send a 7.3m offer sheet to Kucherov, 1st line winger capable of a PPG perhaps even next year. Don't tell me that a 1st 2nd and 3rd is worth more than a 22 year old top 10 winger!

Thoughts?

I don't remember the last player under 25 that got traded in such fashion. The recent CBAs make it almost impossible to do so.

Seems like not only MB doesn't have the courage, you rarely see offer sheets and I have no idea why. In hindsight every year you can say most teams should have sent an offer sheet to (Young impact player X) because of how their draft picks panned out.

I'm looking at Trouba, Kucherov, ...
But MB would be wise to address our RFA issues first.

NOBODY has the courage to do that....I like how you single out Bergevin like it was a common thing...what a ****ing joke!
Guy doesn't have the courage to trade for the top 6 winger we have needed since he was hired, he sure as hell wouldn't have the courage to piss off the other GM's by offer sheeting one of their players. He's a coward. So afraid of losing his job, he isn't doing his job.

Thoughts?
One drawback to extending an offer sheet is that it creates bad will. A GM who has been stung might retaliate against the Habs in the future. It's better to try to negotiate.

Life expectancy of a GM is what? 5 years? I'd like to think that when a new GM comes into place, the slate gets wiped clean.

Of course it may hinder MB's chances in a future team if he gets another GM job after the habs.

I think it takes a few GMs to break the ice and more will follow suit. Player transfers are a good thing for the league IMO. Players I'm sure are for it, because they can get paid their value when they have little negociating power.

Weird comment about courage when you don't have any details about the trade talks he had with other teams.
Do you know what offers he has received for a top6? What offers has he made and were turned down?
All we know is that MB said himself that he made some aggressive offers that were turned down.

It's generally a gentleman's agreement among GMs. You don't mess with my RFAs/salary cap and I don't mess with yours. These are the people you have to deal with on a daily basis as far as making trades go, so it makes sense to try and keep them in your good graces.

Call Bergevin a coward all you want, but were the 29 other GMs cowards for not offer sheeting Subban, even when he was holding out?

Of course I'd be all for ruthlessly offer sheeting guys like Kucherov or Hoffman if the price was right...but I also understand why GMs don't generally engage in the practice.

Surely the bad will is more likely to impact any future trade talks.

The reality is that we have no idea how common or uncommon offer sheets are. We only know when they are signed, and there is little incentive for a player to sign unless he thinks it won't be matched. You would use it as leverage for a better deal with the team and avoid the bad press if you could, because that could hurt any local sponsorship you have or could get in the short term.

Then there is the fact that fans want to equate UFA prices with those of RFA's. You pay a premium in UFA because there is no asset cost. Why pay the premium if you are giving up assets that are used to offset the premium you are paying?

Also, increasing the price of comparable a hurts all teams in arbitration. That results in higher prices to avoid arbitration and get longer contracts.

Yeah I heard Damphousse saying quite the same the other day. I'm not against it and I think general managers should use offer sheets more. It would surely at least disturbed lightnings financial planning.

And weakening a divisional rival isn't a bad thing at all. It has the potential to unbalance their salary structure, because Palat and Johnson would in turn ask for more. I understand how its a non written rule, but IMO after a few GMs do it and other teams see the benefit in hindsight, it will be a more common thing.

Total agree :handclap:

As for the question I hate the offer sheet. For me its a simple rule. I don't want other teams going after our young players so why should the Habs do it to other teams.
Most GM's see that plus the offer sheets for really good players have been match by there respective clubs so really its a waste of time.

Let's stick with offersheets since this is the title of the thread......newsflash....rarely and I mean in the extreme variety, does a GM offer sheet an RFA. Bergevin won't trade for a top 6, that's another story for another thread.

Was responding to another post.
As for offer sheets, all it really does is over inflate the value and contract of players. I think GM's know this and that is why it's a dying trend.

You sign Kucherov 7.3 mil for 5 years.

Galchenyuk and Beaulieu will become RFA the season after...what money will you have to sign them?

I however think we can mostly agree that the drawback of offer sheets is not the lost draft picks. Because the asset returning is greater than the picks. I think we can agree that pissing off other GMs is the drawback. And IMO canadian markets should use this to their advantage in attracting elite players, in the same way that american markets have the advantage when signing UFAs (taxes, weather, media attention..)
