Expansion draft favor teams with star players and punish those with depth. I know this would require too much effort to do but in a cap system the expansion protection should be cap based.

That said, we have only ourselves to blame for losing a good D. We've had plenty of time to prepare and have shown we are willing to get bent over in a trade.

We’re in the thick of *finally* having real **** to talk about, and in the middle of talking about the lines for opening night, anxiety about the ****ing expansion draft appears outta nowhere.

ADHD is a hell of drug.
It didn't "appear out of nowhere", I brought it up because I was reading about the Seattle situation. It was just a question, no need to freak out. Permission to resume your happy talk.

If we are developing as we hope and expect, we'll either have enough assets in picks and prospects to pay them off, or we'll be able to withstand losing one solid piece. If not, it doesn't matter anyways.

The Caps had what was probably the worst loss for any team during the expansion draft and still won the cup. We did better than any other team did during the expansion draft and missed the playoffs. If we're good, we'll manage to deal with the loss. If we're not good, it won't matter either way.

I wouldn't even put the Caps in the top 5. All the teams that paid Vegas to take their stars would strongly disagree. First and foremost the Florida Panthers would shake their heads in disbelief at you.

Since this is about lines, not the Capitals, where do people figure Foegele slots in?

He'll probably play on the 2nd PP but he's definitely not scoring 15 goals. That will be Hamilton and/or Faulk.

5-10 goals, 30-40 points is probably a safe bet.

Thanks! Should I drop him and pick up Faulk in my fantasy team?

Also how serious did Darling look?

Thanks for the help. Rooting for you this year. Hamilton will do awesome on your blue line. Good hockey trade in the end.

Faulk > Slavin in fantasy no brainer.

I wouldn't be too hasty about that this season.

1) As discussed elsewhere, there's a solid chance that Faulk ends up on the 2nd PP unit now that we have Hamilton.
2) Faulk will definitely skate a lot fewer ES minutes with Hamilton in front of him, and Pesce's not making it easy on him either. Quite possible Faulk is a 3rd pair guy this season.
3) Slavin's not likely to be a goal scoring machine, but Hamilton IS a goal scoring machine and Slavin will be the guy passing to him. Keep in mind that Slavin has traditionally been paired with 2-goal Pesce. His assist numbers could jump quite a bit this season.

All that being said, Faulk tends to generate shots, hits, and PIM at a much higher rate. So if your league tracks those numbers, it goes back to being a no-brainer even if Slavin is good for more points.

Given that we just saw our starting goalie leave the game with “a lower body concern,” does anyone think we might make a waiver claim on one of the guys the Leafs have to send down?

So the Leafs have placed Pickard and McElhinney on waivers. Who would you take, if any? Pickard might have more career upside, but McBackup might be the better guy to bring in to be a good backup option and stable.

The team has placed Connor Carrick, Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard on waivers in order to send them to the minor leagues.

Darling is going to be good this year. Watching him in preseason, it's the guy from Chicago, not the guy from last year. All the things that we complained about last year in terms of just being fundamentally bad are gone, seemingly a function of being ridiculously out of shape. For me, I'm just scrubbing last year from my memory when assessing him, because (hopefully) it will be a set of circumstances that will never again be replicated.

So if we are confident at all in Darling, the question is whether Pickard or McBackup are any better than Mrazek. I'd go with Mrazek without too much difficulty. He just has more upside.

And I'd be comfortable with Booth or Nedj stepping in as backup to start the season. They both were really impressive in the preseason. Enough to earn the job of #3 I think.
