Benning can also shed over $6M in cap by buying out Holtby/Virtanen.
OEL would immediately be one of the two best defensemen on the team. Holtby and Virtanen buyouts don’t provide that. Additionally, the proposed trade does not preclude the Canucks from also deciding to buyout Holtby and/or Virtanen. It’s not mutually exclusive.

I just want to personally laugh at any team that willing takes on that contract. (Please don't be Edmonton. Please don't be Edmonton. Please don't be Edmonton)

Please be Edmonton and not Boston. Please be Edmonton and not Boston. please be Edmonton and not Boston.

Trading Myers for OEL would go against Benning’s “big and strong” mandate. Sadly, he’d probably prefer to trade the “smaller”, albeit much better Schmidt in such a trade.

That said, I really don’t see ownership signing off on OEL’s remaining contract, I don’t see them allowing Benning to make any commitments that large at this point in his tenure.

I don't know if OEL would accept a trade to Mtl after their cup run but i would propose this deal :

Drouin + 2021 1st
for
OEL with 1,75M$ retained.

Fair??

Take out the retention. Make up for the salary by adding Kulak. Make up the value difference by removing the pick. Ends up OEL for Drouin and Kulak.

I guess we have a base of discussion. I would accept dropping the retention but Byron would have to replace Kulak in that case because OEL full salary would be a problem for us for 2022-2023.

Would you do Drouin + Byron + 2nd for full OEL?

That really doesn’t help our budget crunch this season. Drouin and Byron are owed only a million less is cash than OEL is.

Buying out Byron helps this season but it’s not much relief as he’d be owed 4.5 over four, rather than 6.8 over two.

The trade and buyout only saves Arizona 3.85 in each of the next two seasons. But it saves them 9.35 in that 3rd year. That’s where the value is.

The 2nd rounder does help take the sting off. And I would be interested to see what Tourigny can do with Drouin.

Overall, I guess I’d have to grudgingly accept that trade, and immediately buyout Byron.

If Drouin actually returns and is fully invested next season, Coyotes would be a fantastic fit for him. That would be really intriguing.

No. Drouin has medical problems and Montreal's 2021 1st. doesn't do much for me. You add in the retention on OEL makes it even easier to say no.

He sucks for what he brings. His contract is killer. He can't defend to save his life. Arizona is looking to get rid of that contract. We need someone like Erik Cernak. Hughes brings enough offence but needs a reliable parner.

Yeah, I would really be interested to see what he could do in a low pressure market, on a roster that's rebuilding, with a head coach from Quebec that's built his entire reputation on being good with young players.

OEL is a really good defenseman. His aav is 20% too high. But his cash is lik 40% too high. That's the problem for ARI. It's less about the 8.25aav the next few years and more about the 10.5mil in cash each of the next three season. Yotes are an internal budget team (rumored to be around 68mil) and can't have their 2nd best LD making 16% of their entire player budget. I expect him to rebound with his new team, have a great season, and have all of the same morons in this thread saying he sucks, claiming that Arizona got hosed and were incompetent to trade him. These loud mouth know it alls never admit when they're wrong. If he gets traded, they'll all say that the acquiring team was stupid to trade for him . A year from now, they'll say Arizona was stupid to give him away.
