Nashville will always have an out with Duchene if he under performs. There will be a market for him in a trade at 8 million. As of now, this isn't the bad contract people make it out to be.

His contract is so stupid. He took a discount predicated on signing in a specific city and didn't get any trade protection.

I honestly can't comprehend how stupid of a thing it is to take a "hometown" discount to go to a preferred destination and not get any certainty that you'll actually be able to stay there.....

Even if Duchene finishes with 50 points, Nashville would have takers for him this summer and they'd get some picks/prospects or a different player.

That’s because they let him know they didn’t need him and if he wanted to play for them he was going to have to take what they say.
Toronto should have done the same with JT.
Just say no thanks sign somewhere else if you don’t like it

This man, just like Kyle Turris...cashed in at the right time when his value was hot.
Get subpar production but he's getting paid mega bucks.

I totally forgot he played for Nashville.

Meh, he's not doing nearly as badly as people are suggesting. No one on Nashville ever puts up tons of points, that's just the way they play.

He and the whole team are slumping, he'll bounce back, but if people were expecting a superstar out of him, then they should temper those expectations a bit.

No JT ran around found the highest contract he could and told Dubs I could get this so you better give me at least that.
Most guys around his skill level and age all took 9.5 he didn’t take a ‘discount’ he became the second highest cap hit in the NHL and moved back home to play for his dream team.
Only Mcdavid was making more per year, second highest paid player nowhere near the second best player, the legend of his discount is crapola

So what? He shoulda been told “10 or take a hike, we have a No1 center and top winger that need big contracts so unless you want to help us out we can’t destroy our team so you can break out the jammies”
Nashville knew the Montreal crap was a bluff to try and get more money, so was JT’s

Poile simply doesn't give out trade protections. Forsberg, Ellis, Ekholm, Johansen, Arvidsson... none of them have any sort of clause in their contracts. No idea how he makes that happen (no state income tax!!) but that's the way his contracts work.

Slight caveat in that he will give out the protections if you are a bona fide Preds Legend and will have your number retired by the team, say. So Josi and Rinne. Nobody else yet... Forsberg may need to step it up if he wants to get one on his next deal, he's not quite that level yet.

That's still quite ridiculous because on any other team Forsberg would surely get some sort of protection on a UFA deal. But that's the standard in Nashville.

Of course they can only do that as long as players are happy in Nashville and want to come/stay here. That's been easy to pull off lately because they've had generally good teams and the environment has been positive and comfortable for the players. If the team goes down the tubes there's no guarantee they'll be able to stick with that policy and still attract/retain talent. Also, Poile will probably retire in the not-too-distant future (he's turning 70). So his successor may have a different approach. But it has definitely been nice while it lasted.

Tavares and his contract are not and never were the problem in Toronto. What they did after signing him was.

Not this crap again...

you do realize that Ron Francis has even gone so far to say that he expects that having his AHL team in a tax free state will be an advantage in signings.......

Let that sink in. It is on 31 thoughts if you want to listen.

It's not a "tax free" state. It's a state with no state income tax and a high sales tax. And if I understand correctly players get paid and taxed based on where they play so it's only applicable to half the paychecks. It certainly doesnt make up the difference between 8M a year in Nashville and the rumored 10M a year Montreal offered.

Yes it’s the term that is used. But it is a misnomer.
There are actually a fair number of articles
On it. An accountant for 20 nhl players did the math on duchene on Canadiens vs nashville. And it is a big difference. It’s a huge topic in Canada. Agents. GMs. Players and accountants have shown what a big difference it is
