Newhook playing just as good as Johansen so far this season with lesser linemates but please continue.
I watched him plenty while in Colorado. He was given every opportunity to succeed as a C here and didn’t. I’m quite comfortable in my evaluation of his play while here.

Happy if he’s having success in Montreal, as I don’t dislike the kid, but again—he was handed opportunities in Colorado and squandered them

The corners about 5 v 5 are a bit misguided. The Avs play this guy on PP1. They acquired him in large part to be the net front presence on the PP. if he scores there (he has), he becomes a big threat and defensive priority for opponents. And if RyJo has to be the priority for an opponent PK, that opens up opportunities for guys like Makar, Rans and Mack.

he’s lazy on the ice. At least defensively. But a pretty ideal piece for our PP that’s way better for the role he’s in that JTC ever was.

JTC is a better all round player though. RyJo is not the answer to 2C.

The problem you will have with Joey is when he stops shooting the puck. Right now he has something to prove but I have no doubt he will eventually fall back into his bad habits. If Nashville fans had a dollar for every time he passed on a great chance to shoot we could afford to buy the franchise.

It's really not hard to deduce what I am talking about.

0 Points. Absolutely not good enough.
So he's a PP specialist. That's at least something to work with. He's a +2 with 4 goals in 8 games for a team that is really struggling to put the puck into the net considering all the high danger chances they create.

Avs have the 19th best shooting % in the NHL right now, but have a much higher % of high danger chances for than 19th overall.

Let the law of averages start to do its thing.

The points will undoubtedly come if he continues at 60% xGF% at 5v5. That's dominant possession no matter what. But hey, let's start the "unacceptable" talk eight games in.

People thought there would be better results in his first 10 games?
I've just been pleased he doesn't look as slow as I figured he'd look vs the rest of the roster.

4 goals and an assist through 8 games is better than I expected from Johansen honestly, I couldn't really care less how he does it

Number three on the Avs through seven games as far as xGF% is concerned (second if you throw out MacDermid). What on Earth are you talking about?
The fact that MacDermid is 2nd tells you all that you need to know about how valid an argument this is .. as well as how flawed it is to put to much faith in some of the advanced stats that advanced stats junkies hold in such high regard for that matter.

MacDermid has played one game and the rest of the team has played eight. Your issue is sample size, not xGF%.

It must just be coincidence the best players in the league are at or near the top of xGF% leader board every year, right? Or the fact the analytics community has found the strongest correlation for scoring goals is xGF%?

Nah, I'm sure your intuition is much better overall.

The fact that you don't realize how awesome MacDermid is clearly shows how little you watch the Avs. :sarcasm:
