Whoever is on this name committee aren't all that bright. The North Stars? Ah that would be Minnesota, also known as the North Star state. Rough riders and Force? They are taken. The Calvary? What a slap in the face of the Sioux Nation. Keep it just North Dakota and move on.

I'd say 'Cavalry' was (forcibly) included by a bitter, big money alumni as a FU to the faction that caused them to lose the Sioux name. It's a fine theory.

The CFL used to have the Rough Riders and the Roughriders. So if UND goes that route I would suggest Rough-Riders. Just to avoid confusion. :)

And then there were five:

Fighting Hawks
Nodaks
North Stars
Roughriders
Sundogs

Think I'm pulling for Roughriders or Nodaks for you guys. Fighting Hawks just seems too generic, North Dakota North Stars just seems a tad redundant, and Sundogs just gives me a mental image of an Arizona team even though I understand what it actually means and that it actually is applicable in North Dakota.

I'm hoping for either the North Stars or Fighting Hawks. Just imagine the consternation on the faces of Gopher fans if UND took that name. The Hawks... I agree it's generic, but seems like a safe choice.

If they pick Roughriders I envision visiting teams' fans throwing condoms on the ice, and if it's Sundogs you know the poor cheerleaders are going to hear some brutal one liners in the crowd.

Nodaks seems redundant.

Not really a fan of any of the mascot names, to be honest. Current student with only three semesters left, I don't really have any dogs left in the fight but I figure I'd chime in anyway.

Roughriders is dumb because one of the high schools here has the exact same mascot. It makes it seem like UND is trying to copy a high school, even if they are clearly not and 95% of people outside of Grand Forks will never know the difference. It seems like a decent mascot choice, but I'm personally not a fan.

Fighting Hawks? The Chicago Blackhawks worship on campus is just about nauseating, from similar imagery between the Hawks and Sioux, to the constant reminders of the Blackhawks and Toews at the Sioux shop and elsewhere(Parise, Oshie, and others are practically ignored in favor of Toews), to the exact same goal song and now blatantly copying the same name as much as they can without getting in trouble -- it's just too much. Part of this could be me being a bitter Wild fan, I admit.

North Stars is perhaps the worst offender, IMO. That belongs with Minnesota, not North Dakota. I don't care if half the students are from Minnesota and half the town (I'm being extremely generous) is over the eastern border, North Dakota North Stars doesn't seem right.

That leaves Nodaks and Sundogs. Like Cascadian said above, Nodaks seems redundant. North Dakota Nodaks? It's not bad, but it's not good either. A personal plus for Nodaks is that when I played on the club lacrosse team here we weren't allowed to use Sioux so we played as the Nodaks. So the jerseys still hanging in my closet would be applicable in a way. Still not a fan of the name though.

Sundogs aren't much better, but they're my #1 at the moment.
