Did he play defense before??

Yes, he played a lot of defence for the past two years before coming into this season. And yes, he is absolutely awful at it. He would be a serviceable defenceman because he moves around pretty well for his size and can take a lot of punishment, but his lack of IQ and puck skills are noticeably bad for turnovers. If he could've played defence, he would be a 9-12-minute per night #7. Forward-wise, his lack of IQ and puck skills means he's simply chasing the puck constantly.
