NHL Salary Cap: How much should teams commit to their star players?

This article is a smart way to look at it. It's not necessarily the cap hit, but the percentage of cap space your stars are taking up.

You could probably make a nice bell graph in regards to the first chart, with each teams success versus the collective cap hit of their 5 biggest contracts.

The cap space taken up by those 5 biggest contracts by previous Cup winners in the salary cap era is roughly between 45-50% -- which makes a lot sense, half dedicated to your stars, half dedicated to your secondary scoring & role players.

So if the cap is at it's projected $75million in $2015-2016, and Chicago doesn't trade away everybody else (likely just Sharp) - Kane, Toews + Crawford/Keith/Seabrook/Hossa/whichever 5 of the big contracts you choose is a little under $39 million or ~51% of the cap.

So it's really just about on target of where an elite team should be with their top tier talent.

What are the rules with trading a Cap Recapture player?

I would think a cap floor team would take Hossa just so they can take the cap hit without having to pay him?

Hossa is most likely going to retire after the 2016-17 season and he will have a cap penalty of 4.2 million for 4 years.

is this confirmed? I'm hearing he briefly retired, only to make the comeback of the year 3 hours later by signing in the KHL.

I'll just sit back and wait for comments about how he won't do **** this year because he's garbage. then I can do this again in 8 months!

I really hope this comes back and burns the Blackhawks, who now have handcuffed themselves to these two. Do they assume the cap is going to go up forever? To have 28% of your cap space tied in two players is insane. They better hope their prospects pan out in a couple of years because what is Brent Seabrook gonna get?

I understand Lou's conservative approach to salaries, especially after the cap hell they went through a couple of years ago. Another bravo for an outstanding Schneider contract.
