What's everyone's thoughts on the Carter goal? I don't understand the rule.

His initial kicking motion kicked the puck into his skate which deflected it into the goalie's pads and into the net (assuming you buy the fact it never touched his stick).

The initial kicking motion didn't score the puck.

So for example if someone kicks the puck in the slot and it bounces off an opposing player, off the goalie and in.

What's the ruling?

Shoulda been ruled a goal.

That was a good call. I'm surprised they actually reviewed it for as long as they did.

49.1 Kicking – The action of a player deliberately using his skate(s) with a kicking motion to propel the puck or to contact an opponent.
49.2 Goals - Kicking the puck shall be permitted in all zones. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who kicks a puck that deflects into the net off any player, goalkeeper or official.

A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player’s skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal. A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking player’s skate shall be a legitimate goal as long as no distinct kicking motion is evident. The following should clarify deflections following a kicked puck that enters the goal:
(i) A kicked puck that deflects off the body of any player of either team (including the goalkeeper) shall be ruled no goal.
(ii) A kicked puck that deflects off the stick of any player (excluding the goalkeeper’s stick) shall be ruled a good goal.
(iii) A goal will be allowed when an attacking player kicks the puck and the puck deflects off his own stick and then into the net.
A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who kicks any equipment (stick, glove, helmet, etc.) at the puck, including kicking the blade of his own stick, causing the puck to cross the goal line.

Guess this answers my question.

The ruling is that the NHL RULE regarding this needs to be overhauled.

You either BAN all goals off skates *or* ALLOW all of them. Not half-ass it and put it in the hands of biased refs to determine what is and isn't a goal.

this season was probably my least favorite as a Devils fan, losing Parise and Kovy hurts more than we would like to admit

the effort was there pretty much all season but we lack the talent

Man is Kaoss in for a surprise tomorrow morning when he watches the game

Why, you think he actually expected a three-game winning streak? :sarcasm: :shakehead

They didn't lose the season tonight, they lost it with their nine million other blown games, shootout losses, no-shows against bad teams. Tonight was 'actual' bad luck (and perhaps a bad call)...but they deserved all the boos they got at the end of the game for putting themselves in that position in the first place as an organization.

Any video of the carter goal

Odds are there's no view that actually shows the puck being deflected since that's all the NHL cares about - irrefutable evidence. Even if all common sense looking at the replay says the puck changed directions and thus was deflected off the stick, if there's no angle that actually shows the deflection it's tough ****.

Kind of like when the goaltender falls on the puck in the crease and his whole body's over the line but they still don't call it a goal, if they don't actually see the puck they won't call it.

Pretty much this. This loss doesn't really hurt. Losses to the Sound Tigers and Americans with a mostly healthy lineup are the ones that hurt. A two goal blown lead to the scrubs in Sunrise is one that hurts. A 3 goal blown lead in the last 12 minutes of the game back in October hurts.

And you know what hurts the most? 3 out of 4 games against the CBJ were losses. The absolute worst being a game in which we had a 2 goal lead back in December. We have an even or winning record against every team in the division this year. At least every team other than the CBJ that is.

And then lost the tie late in regulation. That one game will probably be the difference in the end, since that was a four-point swing.

Let's say we won the season series over the CBJ but lost the season series to the Hurricanes. We would probably be in the wild card spot right now.:cry:

There are many points in time you can point to and say what if.

If we don't start off with 1 win in the first 8 or 9 games and win half of the shootouts we have 90 something points now.

So much went wrong this season it is impossible topoint to one thing.

Even if we lost the season series to one of the Rangers or Flyers but won the series series over Columbus, we would be in the wild card spot.
