For that contract you'd better hope so.
~8M is going to be the going rate for ~40 goals scoring wingers coming out of ELCs or bridge deals (or the equivalent if scoring decreases or increases). And it was going to be that way regardless of that Caufield contract.

You can say that it's not a "steal", but it's a fair contract - for both sides. There is risk involved as with any long term contract.

Yes, exactly or as viewed at the time, an over the hill goalie/defenseman and overrated C. The question wasn't "are they good enough to carry" it was "are they good enough to make it"

Not to any fan playing in the Canadian division that year. Habs played the Oilers tough all year.

There is a big difference between cheering your team on and actually watching them play. Actually watching CC play shows that:
- He's a small perimeter player who takes most of his shots from long range and bad angles
- He struggles defensively
- He doesn't drive puck possession and therefor spends most of his time in the defensive zone

He has value as a PP specialist and secondary scoring 5v5 but you won't win much if he's slotted into the role of a top forward and he won't produce as much if he isn't slotted in that role. IMO 7.85 million is more than I would want to pay for players in this role even though it probably isn't too far off his market vale. It's not crippling like some of the RFA contracts we've seen, but I still think Habs fans will turn on him long before this contract expires.

Yeah but the Americans think it was a soft division

Montreal fell off for obvious age/injury/trade reasons, but Edmonton, Toronto and Calgary have all been tops in their mixed divisions since. So that criticism has been proven incorrect.

You NEVER watched him play. You are COMPLETELY wrong and out to lunch. How's the food?
