Think of it this way - right or wrong, if you want Van fans to agree to this deal as a base, you will have to add a lot. It makes zero sense for this franchise, regardless of player value.

If you were rebuilding and had one of the most exciting young Dmen in hockey, would you trade him for Gallagher before he's played a season? No. Of course not. That'd be dumb. It would take a significant add to make you do it.

I really like Gallagher.

With that being said we do not make this trade for two reasons:

1) Gallagher won't return Hughes. Keep in mind, he was the 7 OA in a deep & recent NHL draft. Further to that, he has increased his value since that point.
2) We lack high end defensive prospects, especially ones who can move the puck up ice. Quinn is really our only hope of developing an elite puck mover within our current pool, we simply cannot trade him for a forward.

The general consensus among scouts, analysts and most fans across the league is that Hughes is a top end prospect with top pairing upside. It's not Vancouver fans who built his hype.

I'm not a Canucks fan but I'll go on a limb and say that he will be one of the top 30 dmen in the league for more than a few years and will receive Norris votes are least once in his career. I'd bet on that.

He's a core piece of their rebuild, it would take an equal core piece of ours.

Kotkaneimi would be their ask.

Trading future cores never works out for either team.
