Actually Dahlin and Svechnikov are both better prospects than Matthews IMO. At the very least they are at the same level. So yes, if the Habs tanked now they would get a player of equal value. The difference is the Habs wouldn't have a Marner and Nylander.

True, but in order to draft Dahlin or Svechnikov the Habs would have to go full rebuild, which means trading the likes of Pacioretty, Price, Galchenyuk. Surely the returns on these guys would give us some additional young assets, though likely not at the same level of a Nylander or Marner. We should also remember that the Leafs acquired Matthews, Marner, and Nylander over the course of three drafts. We should not think that we could do the same in one. If the goal is to tank our way to success, we should plan to draft high for at least three years.
