Agreed. I think the debate over who is second best is a lot closer. Kucherov, Drai, Matthews, McKinnon are all in the mix.

Not really. The regular season was debatable between the two, and picking Matthews was more than understandable. 50 in 50 for the first time since Lemieux, the third 60 goal season since the lockout (in 73 games). A ppg of 1.45 which ended up pretty close to McDavid's 1.54. There was a case

Playoffs is where it changed and McDavid hit another gear. If someone asked who has had a better playoffs it would be a landslide. But at the time of the poll it wasn't ridiculous to believe Matthews was having the better year
