Why did you direct this to me? I already said the Oilers were stupid if they were to give McDavid 13.25 million per year. It is an asinine amount for one player.
oilers don't 30 other teams will. he had the best high scoring chance 5v5 in the league. and by a country mile. wasn't even close. he's only going to get better. like it or not its happening. based off cap% its the same as every other generational/superstar elite contract. ovy, sid , etc.

Lol Sid signed for a similar % of the cap. Have to think about the cap going up, 8,7 mill isnt the same then and now because the cap has gone up

you are 100% right, but at that time they knew the cap would get significantly higher, today's projected cap is under much uncertainty imho.

I'm just glad Matthews isn't 'generational' if that's the generational asking price. No thanks. I hate the cap.

its his life. Crosby, Kane and ovy all signed for similar or higher cap % hits. he's not signing for 8-9 million. its reality. even the nhlpa would step in and fight it. he's going to and deserves to be paid. there are NHL teams who would offer him more then 13 million. and who's to say he won't win one? you have No clue. don't be an armchair gm. this is happening. as it should.

This is what kills me about certain fans. What does he do to "deserve" 13.25 million per year? He scored 30 goals and got 100 points. There have been many players who have done that and more without ever earning 13.25 million per year. He produced 11 more points than Kane, so why does he "deserve" 3 million more per season?!?! For crying out loud, the guy plays a game, he does not "deserve" 13.25 million per year. You make it sound like paying the guy 11 million would somehow deprive him of a decent lifestyle. Poor McDavid, if he sign for 11 or 12 million he won't be able to pay the rent anymore. He better get the highest amount of millions he possibly can or he will have to eat spam for the rest of his life. "Deserves" and "should" when talking about making 11 million or 13 million to play a game is bloody asinine if not outright stupid.

I dont disagree with the idea that sports stars are paid too much, but they are a product of their environment. People want to watch them play, they draw ratings, they get paid.

Is the amount egregious? Sure. But its no different than any other profession. You can choose Decent insurance, Good insurance, or the best insurance. Having heart surgery? Want a good doc, a better doc, or the best doc?

These contracts are business decisions from the ownership groups. Oilers ownership is hedging their bet that they can make more than 104 million off McDavid in the next 8 years. I dont find that too far fetched, to be frank. I'm sure theyd love a cup, but this isnt soccer where billionaires buy teams and play fantasy sports to win championships. These are rich men for sure, but men who are out to make a profit. At 104 million over 8 years, McDavid will likely still be profitable for them.

In our life if you're good at your job and help generate more income for your company you get compensated with a higher pay. It just so happens the game these guys play happen to have a mucher higher pay scale.

McDavid in terms of the NHL entertainment business is hands down the most important player to any franchise that would be so lucky to employ him.

The NHL on a league wide scale is lucky to have him. He deserves to be the highest paid player and buy a good margin because he is the best player by a good margin(I still love Sid's game more overall but just a matter of time til McDavid picks up the areas he lacks in).

Does he deserve to be paid millions to play a game? No. But thats the world we live in.

Deserve is a relative term.

In the NHL, they are paid a certain amount and based on that criterion he " deserves" what he will get paid.

In fact, in an uncapped league, he'd get 20M+ so he's taking a discount for his peers as it is.

Plus comparing Kane to McDavid doesn't make sense unless you think McDavid already hit his prime at 20 years of age. They're paying him for a lengthy peak that will be higher than anything Kane's ever done in his career.

It's not him, it's his agent and the NHLPA that have been pressuring him to sign such a high deal. because if he signs it, then it's a win for them.

but anyways, do any sports athletes or Hollywood actors deserve the millions they make? Who's to say. They provide entertainment for us and we shell out millions a year to watch. They then in turn get paid well to do so. it's the nature of the beast.

You do know that Crosby's 5 year deal ate up only 1 UFA year while McDavid's rumored will eat up 4 UFA years, right? Crosby's AAV would have almost been certainly higher if it was an 8 year contract.

1. There is no standard equation that quantifies what a UFA year is worth.
2. Crosby is a poor example when discussing UFA years being purchased because he sold them all for the same amount he took in the five year deal.
3. Crosby is obsessed with 87. Born 8/7/87. Took 8.7 on both deals. Would it have "almost certainly" been higher?

I mean.. I have no problem saying McDavid is better than Gaudreau, but is he twice as good? Is he 3 million better than three time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane? He hasn't shrank from pressure yet but being the highest paid player in the history of the league is quite the jump.

Not at all, he's the best player in the game at 20 years old.

Crosby also has a contract that is illegal now. His last three seasons on it are for 3 million, therefore dropping the cap hit considerably.

Exactly.

One contract was signed under a different CBA with a different cap so let's stop comparing them.

Uh, no one broke McDAvids shoulder. He lost an edge with a little contact and went in to the board awkwardly. It legitimately wasnt a punishable play.

Bu youre right, the NHL protects Sid in the sense that no matter what he does, hes allowed to play. So Sure, i guess youre right. Maybe if he didnt take so many cheap/nut shots, people wouldnt gun for him. Wind blows both ways, man.

I mean. Thats just wrong. Crosby does little dirty stuff. But he gets hit with major dirty plays all the time. (staal crosschecking him in the neck, steckel, Subban punching him in the head, some no name dman in Tampa this year boarded him) NHL is pathetic at protecting it's stars. The abuse crosby takes is outrageous.

You clearly have an anti-Oilers agenda as you called Draisaitl overrated in the Draisaitl thread:
2j0h3et.png

Do yourself a favor and log out. You're embarassing yourself

Draisaitl is overrated and you claim he should make more than Ovechkin and Stamkos who have at least years of production. If you idiots had a clue you would know in a socialist economy with single payer healthcare that taxes will be sky high and a ECONOMY killer which is why the Cap wont go up drastically anymore. Also my Oilers agenda is nonexistent but im not the sheep who just say McDavid is worth 13.25 million per. He doesn't have a 120 point season and his production compared to other guys who have gotten 100+ points tells me he is not worth 13.25 RIGHT NOW is not worth 3 million more than Patrick Kane. Sorry but ive got to be the voice of reason and say McDavid had a good season and hes a great young player. But hes getting money while not accomplishing no where near what other guys have who didnt get that kind of money. Period.

If you believe in the free market, you believe in businesses and agents getting what the market deems to be their worth.

Every team in the league except maybe three would deem McDavid worth 13m a year. For many reasons, his speed, his age, his extraordinary skill, his composure, etc. I'd argue many teams would be willing to go as high as 15 or whatever the max salary is.

It's the free market after all - what are you, a commie?

Well, I actually am a commie and even I think this "McDavid doesn't deserve it" thing is ridiculous within the context of the league generating billions of revenue.
Do I think leaving everything to free markets which allocate a Kardashian about 100,000 times the yearly income of a nurse is a horrible way to run a society? Absolutely. But if McDavid doesn't deserve the money than who does? And is that where it ends up, if he takes a pretty discount? Yeah, thought not. Deserve is just such a loaded word here.

Today's cap is based on a 76 cent canadian dollar. Our economy is strong and it could easily go to 85 cents.

That alone pushes the cap up significantly

I don't think McDavid should take more than $11M AAV for 8 years. If he takes more, he reduces his chance at winning a Cup. Money won't be an issue and he's going to get his share with endorsements. Hockey is the ultimate team sport (like soccer). There are individual stars but in a Salary Cap league, Stars need to be cautious with how much they take in salary if they want to win several Cups.

Crosby at $8.7M is one example. Just imagine Crosby at $12M over the last few years. Would they of had room to go get Kessel?

McDavid at $13.25M likely means Drai is traded or both RNH & Lucic are unloaded with minimal salary coming back. The 2019-2020 season is the biggest problem. McDavid, Drai, Nurse, Strome, Talbot, Maroon, Puljujarvi with new contracts. That's about $40-$45M in cap hit right there on top of the $33M already committed to 7 players. So you have 14 players signed with very little money (maybe $3M +/-) to sign the 9 players you need to reach the 23 man roster.

Oilers better draft well so they have multiple young players on ELC. There will be no room to sign free agents.

If Crosby can only get 8 year deals he doesn't take 8.7 it's getting so old hearing that reasoning over and over to bash mcdavid.

So if McD and Drai sign their reported deals, what's the plan in Edmonton?
I assume they'll have to look at trading RNH for a cheaper replacement and maybe buy-out Lucic to spread his cap out a bit or add a nice piece to him/retain and ship him out too?

100% BS!

Crosby's first big contract after this ELC (started in 2008):
- 5 years at $8.7M (signed from age 21-25)
- 2008 Salary cap was $56.7M.
- 20% of the Salary cap was $11.34M
- Crosby took 15.3% of the salary cap in 2008 at age 21

Crosby's next contract (started in 2013):
- 12 years at $8.7M (signed from age 26-37)
- 2013 Salary cap was $64.3M
- 20% of the Salary cap was $12.86M
- Crosby took 13.5% of the Salary cap in 2013 at age 26

2017 Salary Cap: $75M
- McDavid's contract at $13.25M is 17.7% of the Salary Cap.

Nobody is trying to "bash" McDavid. Were just putting things in perspective and how this is going to hurt the Oilers with cap space. Your getting sensitive about it.

Buying out Lucic would be a $4M cap hit for 12 years! Don't think they do that. lol
