I don't think Edmonton even cares about the AAV if they get him locked down for 8 years.

If he's willing to sign for 8 years, two words: blank check.

You get a generational talent locked for all his best years?

Yeah. You give him whatever he wants and be thankful for every dollar it's below the max.

Damnit edmonton. Why???

What do you think Matthews is going to want now?

The cap better go up every year.

They'll still be able to compete as long they aren't stupid and give someone like Kris Russell $4 mill a year for too many years.

Wonder what Draisaitl will get. The impact of this will be significant if the cap remains stagnant going forward. Edmonton will quickly become like Chicago, as will Toronto, and potentially a few others like Buffalo, Winnipeg, etc.

McDavid deserves this, but times are changing where the elite guys won't take discounts, so lower-level or mid-level or aging players won't get as big of a piece as they have been or talent will start to spread out to all clubs again.

I love Matthews to death but he's no Connor McDavid.

We'll get an idea of what Matthews will cost after next year.

What does this do for Draisaitl. He isn't going to be okay with 7 million. As good as McDavid is (arguably the greatest out there) there's no way Draisaitl is going to agree to take half of what McDavid will make for the next 8 years.

Let's get this out of the way:

Not saying he doesn't deserve it - because he most likely does.

However,

This is going to cripple Edmonton cap wise. With a stagnant cap, I don't see how this will work out. They better win now before it's too late.

Hes not the same player but he's comparable. He signs for a few million less no matter what.

The lower McDavid gets the lower we can get Matthews.

Rather have him at $13.25 AAV for 8 years than drag my feet just for him to sign a max deal offer sheet w/ one of the 30 other teams. Good for Edmonton to get a small concession of 750k out of it.

$1.75M dollar below max? Sure, why not, for 8 years. If Draisaitl gets over $7M, they both need to realize they are not going to get the support on the wing that they probably want.

Crosby signed on to an $8.7 cap hit following a season where he put up 120 points in 79 games, and then re-upped on that cap hit for 12 more years. There is something to be said for a guy who understands making room on the team for a supporting cast.

That's ok - Draisaitl will develop character issues and get traded to Carolina or something.

It takes two to tango. Chiarelli goes fast and hard with contracts and trades, so the fact that he's getting this done right now speaks volumes. ****, McDingle has one more year left on his ELC.

Only 17.66% of the cap.

Pretty sure Crosby was 18% of the cap when he signed the 8.7x12 deal, and that sure hasn't crippled them, even with Malkin making more money.

The cap will most likely go up, and this contract will probably look like a steal in 5 years.
