Sure, for 10 games or so, then it's right back to packing in 13K with the "all you can eat" ticket package.
Look, I'm trying to insult the loyal fanbase, but let's be realistic, it's been 20+ years and we're still talking about the financial woes of the organization.
Auston Matthews, or Sidney Crosby, or Connor McDavid is going to produce nothing more than a temporary spike in interest. JMO
Bad management + bad ownership + bad arena = bad franchise. You know who used to draw less fans than the Coyotes between 2004 and 2007? The Chicago Blackhawks. Not saying the Coyotes can get to their numbers (they literally can't, their new arena will only seat 16,000) but it's really hard to create loyal fans when everything is a disaster.
Any arena in Glendale was going to fail. When they were in the US Airways (now Talking Stick) they regularly averaged around 15,000 in an arena ill suited for the NHL where capacity was only around 16,000. The new arena in Tempe will be better located, near Arizona State, and closer to the population. They hope to have it done for 19-20.
You know what would be great to kick off your new arena? Hmmmmmmm.
(Just to be clear: I think Auston re-signs in Toronto, I just want to see the offer sheet made)
The discussion wasn't about what Matthews would do. It was how the Coyotes could afford it. Matthews might want to quit hockey and be a pro wrestler in a year for all I know. Also the recruit stuff is so easy to twist. Maybe he recruited Tavares so when he leaves Toronto he knows they won't hurt as badly as if he left them without Tavares? OoOoOoH. If you can't accept this as silly fun go be serious elsewhere.
