Marner was his equal in there draft -1.

Marner CHL numbers when age and league adjusted destroy Barzal. Marner has been equal or better than Barzal for the last 4 years. This is the first time Barzal has an edge. It’s going to take a lot more than 35 games to change the previous track record.

No he was not

CHL and age adjusted? Really, you don't even need that to see Marner had the better season. If anything that argument helps Barzal (WHL Seattle, same birth year and month)

OHL scoring translates better to the NHL by all studies. I win Fyfes model has the OHL at a value of 1.1 to 1.05 for the WHL.

And Marner absolutely was his equal in there draft -1 seasons.

Barzal was injury prone his whole junior career and Marner destroyed him in points every year since 2014-2015.

Let's wait more than 34 games to claim Barzal is better...

I don’t care about hype pre-junior and no one really should when evaluating for the NHL.

Okay

OHL scoring translates better to the NHL by all studies.

????????????

35 games isn't enough to change the fact Marner was better for the previous 3 years.

So ignore juniors like you said why do you take Marner's 77 games and ignore Barzal's 35 rookie season.

I guess we'll wait 40 games and declare Barzal the winner, fine by me

When did I ever say ignore juniors? I said ignore pre-juniors which is Bantam and minor-midget. Which is what you pointed to when saying Barzal was better than Marner prior to the time frame I mentioned.

OHL scoring transfers better to the NHL than WHL scoring. That is simply a fact derived from statistical analysis.

Marner for me, hasn't had the best start to the season but hard to go against what he's achieved in his Junior and NHL career.

Gonna need more than a ~35 game sample size to change my mind.

I think they're two players that make good comparisons so I went to see how their advanced stats stacked up

Barzal's current rookie season with Marner's best season..

Player A (ranking placement on team)
CF% 53.67 (3rd) RELCF% 5.38 (3rd) GF% 59.46 (3rd) RELGF% 9.46 (3rd) XGF% 51.81 (7th) RELXGF 2.83 (8th) PDO 101.83 iSH% 9.09

Player B (ranking placement on team)
CF% 50.19 (11th) REL -0.22 (11th) GF% 53.4 (8th) RELGF% 4.36 (11th) XGF% 49.22 (20th) RELXGF -1.79 (19th) PDO 102.19 iSH% 12.04

I'm very surprised by the results. Player A somehow is better in 8 out of 8 metric including sustainability. I'll let you figure out who it is

I hope this poll is asked again when Barzal hits 60pts at some point this year. If people are still clinging to the full year argument, they are just delaying the inevitable. Barzal is a top #2C on a playoff position team with 30pts in 34 games. There is simply nothing in his game to not like this year. Better skater, plays Center for the Center > than winger advocates and his underlying advanced stats are off the charts. Barring injuries(knock wood)Expecting him to fall off a cliff seems like desperate and perhaps wishful thinking to me to keep Marner ahead of Barzal.

I would go with Marner

Barzal has shown pretty good upside this year and Marner hasn’t played his best hockey so I wouldn’t be surprised if Barzal won. With that said, Marner is know as a slow starter throughout his career so I expect him to pick it up down the stretch. If Barzal can keep this pace up for the whole year its going to be hard not to take him going forward but for now its still Marner

I wonder if everyone's going to come back when Marner smokes Barzal in points yet again. Barzal is nice but he's going to hit the rookie wall.

Nah, I'll continue to laugh my ass off at HF logic, because if Marner wasn't a Leaf this poll would probably be far closer. Always the same names and same culprits over the years.
Do yourself a favor and just laugh at stuff like this. This nonsense was rampant last year and Leafs fans ended up with all of the last laughs with the series of hilarious bumped threads during the summer.

It's going to happen again, don't worry.
