Scheifele is underrated in general. Excellent player, and he seems to continue to raise his level as his career progresses.

Matthews hasn't had the time Scheifele has yet, and will also develop more.

So the comparison is incomplete, long term.

Presently how can you argue with Scheifele's current run?

Scheifele's run this year is what you hope Matthews can develop into.
Added to the fact that Matthews will be making at least $4 million dollars more next year.
You take the guy who has delivered, doesn't stop improving, and is on the best contract in the league.

Scheifele, he’s better today and has the friendliest contract in the league for a Elite Center while Matthews is 4 years younger he is currently not as good and will likely sign for nothing less than 9 million(probably 10-12m). Not to mention Scheifele is dominant thus far in the Playoffs.

Beautiful B.C.
Having one bad playoff series doesn’t make one a choker.
4 goals 5 points in six games the year before, funny everyone has forgotten that in favour of their new agenda.

"He's overrated and he chokes in the playoffs! Plus he's going to get 12 million per season cuz thats what he is worth despite being overrated!"

Keep dreaming leafs haters, Matthews is gonna be a force for the leafs for a long time.

Matthews. He's 4.5 years younger, and pretty much already equal to Scheifele offensively at this point (Matthews had 34 goals, 29 assists, 63 points in 62 games this year, while Scheifele had 23 goals, 37 assists, 60 points in 60 games). Given their respective ages, I expect Matthews will surpass him in the near future. That's not a knock on Scheifele either, because he's an elite player, and his contract is a bargain. I'm just going for the younger guy with the perhaps slightly higher upside.

Scheif is an undeniable superstar without a doubt. But so is Matthews already.....at 20. You know what Scheifele was doing in his draft+2 year? Playing in the OHL against teenagers. Obviously it's not a guarantee, but the odds heavily favor Matthews reaching a whole different level than Scheifele in the near future.

Scheif at 6.25 million is an easy choice over Matthews who will likely sign for 10 to 11 million. Makes a huge difference with the salary cap.

Not true at all. He's a point per game player this year just like Matthews. The hopes for Matthews are much higher than the player his is today despite how great that is. He's only 20 so clearly he's still got another level he's going to reach. His ceiling is that of a possible Hart trophy winner.

Matthews had like 63 points in 62 games

that doesn't really count as a ppg player, playing only 3/4 of a season
plus scheifele has been an mvp in the playoffs. Matthews had 2 points

so yes you hope Matthews at least becomes something like scheifele

Matthews just hopes some day to be where Scheifele is now.

Sometimes I can see glimpes of Crosby in Scheifele's game.

I went with Scheif.

I love Matthews and glad we have him. But I love Scheifele as well and he's a little more proven. His contract is a steal as well and with a cap, you have to factor age and contract when judging a player. His age isn't an issue and his contract is a steal.

Every year we end up wit a poll like this. Top 6 centre has a great playoffs after a great regular season and now he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Matthews, but Scheifele at his current deal is the better value and Matthews likely will make 4 million a year more than him.

They had statistically the exact same season both a point a game which means they are equal in offensive production so the whole Scheifele is better right now doesn’t hold up

That being said if Mathews stays at this level but makes significant more money obviously Scheifele’s contract is better, but my money would be on Mathews being better in the long run, Scheifele is one heck of a player though

it does count as being a ppg player because it is ppg. also he would have reached that if he was healthy
