Yeah, its just sad it doesnt sound like we will be able to hold onto him after this season.

He should absolutely be a priority over some of the redundant guys we have. Don't care if he's a UFA and other guys are under contract. Would be foolish to not try hard to bring him back. If he wants to go back to NJ for his family, that's one thing, but if they have the option to make him more than a rental they need to.

Has he been the best tradeline deal so far?

Considering his cost, I would say yes. He's put up a point per game, and is an upgrade over any of our #6 d players.

Here are some of the bigger names:

Yandle: 1 G

Vermette: 2 A (he cost a first rounder lol)

Timonen: 0 pts

Petry: 0 pts

Wisniewski: 2 A

Sekera: 2 A

Coburn: 2 A (injured)

I know I'm missing some but Zidlicky is the only one here to put up more than 2 points. He helps at both ends of the ice and cost so little. Hope he reaches an extension here.

Marek and His Men

Marek Zidlicky is proving to the NHL that he can still play and contribute to the lethal Red Wings power play, the league’s 2nd best (Washington). Zidlicky has had his fair share of time with the Wings’ first power play unit with budding stars Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar and has fit in extremely well with his right-handed shot.

How good has Zidlicky been?

Zids has expressed often wanting to stay here and why some of us assumed he wouldn't even waive.

That said after the trade Lou said he was expendable because of the kids of the right side. So I don't expect him to be coming back. Zids helped a lot while he was here but we don't have room for him and odds we will be looking to add a more tough guy vet on the left to help protect our kids.

Rags don't really have room. Don't believe the Isles do either and I doubt Philly throws in so you guys should have a good shot at keeping him as long as he doesn't hang the skates up.

Zidlicky has to quit fancying he is Pavel Datsyuk. He can't stick handle the puch as he tries when he is the last man.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this. It's been working so far, but if he dipsy-doodles and it screws up late in a one-goal game, it's going to cost the team.

It's pretty telling of the rest of the Wing defence that a 38-year old Zidlicky is at least the 2nd best defenceman on the team.

He's very good at what he does and gives us exactly what we need, but no. He's getting sheltered, which is probably why he excels with us and didn't with NJ(when he got much tougher minutes). 18 minutes a night right now, and I suspect that's not a number that will rise in the playoffs. He's the ideal #5.

Right, he's a bottom pairing PP specialist at this point in his career. And he's done exceedingly well in that position. But let's not make him out to be more than he is.

1 year @ $4 million?

Only if we strike out on Phaneuf, Green, etc or major salary is moved out without much taken on. I love Zidlicky and was one of the ones advocating we get him at last years deadline and ever since but he is what he is. I don't care if he gets $4 million if we exhaust all other options but he can't be a priority at that price.

The thing is, if Zidlicky signs here, it's probably for a better chance at a Cup than in Jersey. So I doubt he'd ask for the moon. 1@3M is fine if someone forgives us Kindl.

What scares me is that he exploits Holland's weakness and asks for a two year deal at something like $2.5 per and Holland jumps at it.

I find it odd that playing with Brendan Smith can lead to one being "sheltered".

It's who they line up against and in what zone, not with. Smith + Zids will get O zone more often and pair up against weaker lines with our defensively minded forward corps this is a shelter for certain.

This can be very costly, specially in the low scoring games like vs blues and those Are the games Babcock wants this team to play.
Cole and Zidlicky seem as nice addition, but the team record is bad with them.

He is not sheltered sheltered, but he is sheltered.

I don't even think that would be that terrible.

In every game I've been watching he was our Best defenseman. Not second best, THE BEST. Kronwall has been awful lately, DeK took a serious step back, and Zid has had the most impact.

Agree 100%.

He's quickly going from being a rental to a priority to keep for at least next season.

I don't think Zidlicky would look as impressive playing against the matchups that Kronwall and DeKeyser get. His mediocre defense would be exposed and everyone would rag on him. They are both better defensemen. Holy over-hype.

Yeah, but at the same time playing above your skill set has been the norm on our defense. Would he look any worse than Ericsson? I doubt it.
