I don't think Zidlicky would look as impressive playing against the matchups that Kronwall and DeKeyser get. His mediocre defense would be exposed and everyone would rag on him. They are both better defensemen. Holy over-hype.

His defense is not his calling card. We all knew that. We weren't looking for Brad Stuart.

His puck moving skills and shot are exactly what was needed. The rest of the defense corps doesn't even come close.

He's very good at what he does and gives us exactly what we need, but no. He's getting sheltered, which is probably why he excels with us and didn't with NJ(when he got much tougher minutes). 18 minutes a night right now, and I suspect that's not a number that will rise in the playoffs. He's the ideal #5.

I agree with this. We do not need Zidlicky to eat minutes. We need him on at the right times, PP, offensive zone starts, etc.

And for the most part, he has not been horrible defensively. According to my scoring system he is making 3rd least mistakes per game, putting him in the top half of our defenders (yes he is getting sheltered but, one would expect that "offensive D man" should be the worst on the team... and he is not)

+1 100% correct.
Yeah, but at the same time playing above your skill set has been the norm on our defense. Would he look any worse than Ericsson? I doubt it.

Ericsson is very underrated on this board. He makes mistakes, but he is a big body doing a good job on the boards.
Zidlicky is good/very good offensively, but as I remember our PP has struggled after we added him. And our team in general struggled after adding him and Cole.
I am not saying it is their fault, but we should be better after adding them. Quite the opposite happened.
I have said many times that Holland should have added a Dman before/long before the deadline. But there is ~10 games left, so we can hope the team settles down.

I think he would defensively. Easily. Sure he would put up more points but he'd probably cause a lot more goals. I've seen him get burned quite a few times facing third-pairing matchups.

His defense is not his calling card. We all knew that. We weren't looking for Brad Stuart.

Sure. I know that. He's good/great in his role as a bottom-pairing PP specialist playing 18 minutes a game. That doesn't make him the best or second best defenseman on our team like some are suggesting. You don't have to make him more than he is to recognize his excellent play.

Agreed, for the most part. He's top three, I'd say.

Sorry for bumping an old thread. Looking for input on Zidlicky as a 3rd RD who plays 14-15 ES minutes per game, maybe 2 minutes on PP.

Does he have anything left in the tank to do that?

Thanks.

Congrats on landing Green. Glad you guys finally got the RD PP QB.

I think he's more than capable of that. I really liked him while he was here.

Probably. Immediately after the trade he looked great. He's obviously a skilled puck mover.

But then the playoffs hit and he was exposed pretty bad by Tampa. On your 3rd pairing you could certainly do worse.

Yeah that was the role he was playing on the Wings and he did alright.

Get ready to scream at your tv for an untimely turnover here or there. He must have coughed it up at the blue line in the O-Zone at least 10 times during his time with the Wings.

He'll score the occasional clutch goal for you guys too though, so it'll all probably balance out in the end.

Thanks for blowing it against Tampa, Marek. Could've brought you back for one more year if you panned out, now we're stuck with overrated Mike Green for three years on a NTC.

Shelly, baby, the negativity is really bringing down the vibe. Can't we be objective about what the upcoming season has in store?

Perspective is key, and I think most would agree, the future is bright.

So you would have preferred 39 yr old Zidlicky vs
29 yr old Green.

I have very little complaints about a 3 yr deal.

If you think about it we just signed:

Richards 1yr
Green 3yrs
Weiss 6yrs (Buyout).

LOL
