Matthews in his 5th season is demolishing what MacK had done in his 5th season and MacK at arguably his peak as a player isn't really much better than Matthews is while still developing. Sure, you can take MacK over Matthews at this very moment in time but I don't think it's gonna stay that way for long. Matthews is on his come up and he's got the rocket in the bag this year. Next year, I wouldn't be shocked if he and Marner take it to another gear and he's challenging for a Ross or Hart or maybe even a Selke. Exciting time to be a Leafs fan.

Well someone referenced 3 year sample sizes and then talked about Matthews having Marner (who is better). Can't remember his name?

Nowhere did I mention that marner and matthews have been playing together for 3 years.

It's amazing how your mind works.

Voted MacKinnon but didn't read the post fully.

MacKinnon is the better player right now but in 3 yrs Matthews may surpass him.

No, you just spoke conveniently.

Last 2 years where matthews played mostly with marner:

Mack 110 points / 82 games

Matthews 99 points/ 82 games

Matthews is behind and that's playing with the superior linemate.

I have no idea what point you're trying to make.

Actually, since the game Marner was put with Matthews, both Matthews and Mackinnon have an identical 105 point pace. The difference is, Matthews leads in goals and primary point production, while getting less PP time, and he's just now entering his prime.

Marner = Rantanen
Landeskog > any of the Leafs L-wingers
Makar > any of the Leafs defenceman

how does Matthews play with superior linemates?

matthews will make it close enough to debate, but it's mackinnon currently and in three years in my estimation

It's hard to say projecting out but up to this point, Mack has pretty clearly been the better player. I am only taking so much away from this weird season, but I do think Matthews will be a 50-goal scorer next year.

Matthews most likely will be the better regular-season player going forward. He still needs to show up for the playoffs. MacKinnon is fantastic in the playoffs every single time.

Give me the better goal scorer and two way player all day long.

MacKinnon’s playoffs stats are neat but how does he look at elimination games? I remember him going completely MIA when it mattered the most.

Matthews has been better this season.

That being said MacKinnon is heating up right before the playoffs. He’s been on fire the last month, or 2.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the postseason. Both guys have big expectations for team and individual success.

HF wouldn't take Matthews over Pettersson, Barzal, Aho, Eichel, Laine or Boeser.

Sure as hell they're not picking him over MacKinnon.
