Matthews easily. Better overall player and his rookie season at 19 is better than anything we've seen from Mackinnon in 5 years.

Matthews right now and Matthews future. There is only one player in the league that I would take, going forward, before Matthews and that player isn't MacKinnon.

Right now? Has to be MacK, there's very few players that are playing better than MacK...right now

Were you not paying attention when MacK did to Matthews and the Leafs what he's been doing ever since Duchene left? He's been astounding this season, both with & without the puck, and his line is just dominating against the best lines in the league, night in & night out.

This is MacKinnon, Matthews is a stud who could well surpass him moving forward, but Matthews has never played as well as MacKinnon currently is...on either end of the ice.

Fun facts, Auston Matthews scored more goals in his rookie year than Mackinnon did in his rookie and sophomore seasons combined, and as a second year player has the higher single season total than Mackinnon has managed in four complete seasons in the NHL.

But yeah, great month Mackinnon's been having.

It's just the collective freudian slip that reveals how incredibly obsessed they are with the Leafs :)

You realize that this is a MacKinnon thread, that just happens to have Matthews included in it. Not the other way around

*two months, in which he's scored 41 points in 28 games while gluing the best lines in the league in their own end, frantically trying to fend him off.

And if we're listing things that have nothing to do with who is currently the better hockey player, MacK scored more playoff points as an 18 year old than Matthews has by the age of 20 :naughty:

Just cause it's happening in Colorado doesn't mean it's not happening :dunno:

Matthews will probably pass him, as he's two years younger, but MacKinnon is at a level right now that we haven't seen from either of them before. And it's been an absolute blast to watch :yo:

Are you saying there is only one player you'd take over Matthews RIGHT NOW?

Going forward, but there are maybe ~10-20 that I'd take over him for the rest of this season and like I said, MacKinnion isn't one of them.

Better than Laine, Scheifele, Wheeler, Mackinnon, Eichel, Boeser, Barzal.

Am I missing anyone?
I'm talking among all the players in the league. Or maybe the better question is what players do you rank ahead of Matthews?

Ohhh, two months, my mistake!

Yeah when Mackinnon scored 10 points in 7 games as an 18 year old in the playoffs we thought we had a superstar on our hands. But he underachieved for the next 3.5 years...

Nathan MacKinnon is a superior player offensively and defensively.
Another poster who hasn't looked at numbers and made a call based on nothing. Mackinnon has a gf% that is 20 worse than Matthews at even strength and has a hdcf% that is much worse. If you want to look at their gap in raw points, yet again it is easy to explain away seeigpng Mackinnon play 65 more minutes at 5v5 this season, and 8o minutes more on the pp. People on these forums (you included apparently) are terrible for providing opinions and passing them off as facts when lots of numbers argue against you.

2 months out of a season that is 2 & a half months old :dunno:

He underachieved for 1 year, while transitioning to playing Center as a sophomore. Two seasons ago he was playing phenomenal hockey before injuring his hand/wrist 30-35 games in; and he was near this level last season, when the rest of the team decided to be historically awful, which dragged his totals down. This level of production is a new development, but not MacK playing exceptional hockey.

But again, what does that have to with his current form? Even if we really had just seen the glimpse up to this point, how does that change how dominant he's been since finding out that the Duchene drama was over? Why are we even talking about previous seasons in a poll asking about who's playing better right now?
