I really would like Woll to get a fair chance. Bringing in a goalie capable of 20 wins can push him off the roster quickly if he struggles.

In an ideal world Woll will shine and become our starter for years, but if he doesn't or we have injury issues then this signing is the safe play. The problem will be if he clears waivers.

We needed a 3G, a veteran with NHL experience.

It didn't matter who we signed, they would need to pass through waivers. We all knew that before the signing.

Do you even have any understanding of our "young cheap players" with respect to goalies?

Which one of these guys do you want to be our #3 Goalie, when there is inevitably going to be injuries to one of our top 2?

Goalie A/ Total North American experience
Toronto MarliesAHL25.280.849

Goalie B/ Total AHL Experience.

30 games2.93.908

and the other two have never played a game in the AHL.

So a combined 32 games in the AHL... and no games in the NHL. Seriously, give your head a shake, if you think these guys have earned their shot yet. Maybe Goalie B gets a look later in the season, if they excel with the Marlies.... but you would still prefer to have someone with experience.

I'd be fine with Hildeby as the #3... Jones is likely much better, but wouldn't be upset if Hildeby got some games... not going to judge him on 2 games in the AHL when his SHL numbers are good.

If either are playing playoff games, we have bigger issues.

Yeah but trading Samsonov to have Jones be the partner to Woll is absolute lunacy. Samsonov is better than Jones in every single way.
Not if the cap space is put to good use. Plus Samsonov gone let's Woll have the net

And Samsonov ain't better in the playoffs.

Barring some type of catastrophe, or miracle, Hildeby doesn't see the NHL for two-three years. He's 21, and has plenty of time to grow his game. Petruzelli would be ahead of Hildeby for a NHL backup role. You just can't go with that kind of inexperience.

Jones might not be great, but it's veteran experience. If somehow Hildeby or Petruzelli shine in the AHL, and there is an opportunity in the NHL, they still might get games, as Jones would need to pass through waivers... they might save him until they really need him.

100%.

It's a fine line. Player is too good he would get nabbed on waivers, not good enough and he wouldn't be any help if called upon.
Worse case he doesn't clear waivers, Leafs will grab another that gets waived.

Excellent pickup, IMO.

Last time Jones was in the playoffs for more than a period he had 20 games, .898 3.02 and a 10-9 record. That was 5 years ago.

This time Sammy had 9 games, .898 3.12 and a 4-4 record.

He hasnt been better than Sammy in the playoffs since he was losing to the likes of Matt Murray.

I'd be thrilled if Samsonov is as good as Andersen. I certainly don't think his ceiling is better
Sounds fair. My main point was in the hope that Woll is well above what McElhinney or Sparks was (a backup) and what Jones figures to be as a Leaf (#3) and that any Woll versus Jones debate is non-existent because Woll could potentially challenge for the starting role over time.

People were fine with Kallgren as the 3G but not Jones? At least this guy put up good numbers in the AHL and even in the NHL until the Sharks traded for Karlsson oddly enough. Been downhill for him since then for someone who looked like a promising young starting goalie back then. The good news about this is he's very cheap and he has a good track record in the league so maybe by the deadline if a team is desperate enough for a starter we might get something for him, or even if a team needs a backup because he might be the best goalie on the market at that time for his price. Also doesn't hurt to have competition with Woll for that backup spot.

Doesn't show the entire thing on here so it didn't make sense, until you open it and realize what they were comparing. Jones trying to cash out like Campbell by making a quick stop here haha.

Can't imagine anyone being fine with Kallgren, that guy was terrible.

Some of you are hilarious with your talk of Woll battling at camp for the #2 job, when he will clearly be fighting Samsonov for the starters job.
This. This guy has the pedigree (look at his pre draft rankings) and he has developed well in the minors. Injuries and Covid slowed this down, but he has been well developed. His NHL performance though small has also been very good, including playoffs.

He could be the next Oettinger.
