People that blame goaltending all the time just miss the forest for the trees. Do you expect to win every game 1-0 or something? This team is built to score goals and win games 5-4, 4-3. But the offence disappears in the playoffs every year. They are built to make the goaltending a non factor. So you're saying these 10+M forwards can not figure out a way to score on good goalies in the playoffs?
Sammy was definitely not the biggest issue last night. He sucked but Matthews, Marner and Tavares were embarrassing last night

Exactly. I am not defending Sammy, he is what he is, but the offence needs to be better. Much better.
People can bring up goaltending and the D all they want but once again this team can’t score more than 1 goal in a playoff game. This shit has to change. You’re not winning a series scoring 1-2 goals a game. Matthews, Marner and Tavares gotta show up

2. We need change.

or.

I'll sign him for 12 AAV, but I want full trade options.
That’s it, if these guys want NTCs you better be giving the team grace on your contract. Sign for 9-10m instead of 12 if you want a full NMC. Tired of the leafs bending over for these players who take them to the dry cleaners because they play well during the regular season. These guys act like they have conn smythes and cups to back up their ridiculous contracts. If we have to let people walk so be it. This team needs a culture change; something akin to the bruins. As much as you can hate the bruins you have to respect the fact that every single one of their players have bought into the vision and every single one of them care more about what’s on the front of their jersey than what’s on the back of their jersey.

Even if we somehow miraculously win the cup this season without that culture change we’re doomed. Our 13.25M player cares more about being a fashionista and Justin Bieber than he cares about putting himself on the line for the team when it matters. Our hometown 11M (soon to be 12.5M probably) winger sounds schizophrenic thinking that the fanbase dislikes him for no reason and tries to put “shambles” in his brain. These two have also made NHL history being the only 2 players to sign contracts with an AAV over 10M without giving max term. Then you have Willy who although has been one of our more consistent players in the playoffs is still prone to Houdini level disappearing acts and also gave the team no grace during either of his contract signings.

This team is truly gutting to watch and if you give any of our superstars an inch they’ll take a whole mile and not give a shit about what they’re affecting in the process. The last rebuild was painful but if we have to suffer through that again for 4-5 years to end up with a product that is enjoyable to watch I’m down.

I love the optimism but at some level, I think I have Leaf blindness. My team really sucks, but I can just somehow pretend their poorly designed roster can somehow beat the team that always seems to crush us. I'm just blind to the obvious. It's all there for everyone to see but me, hoping, 5 decades in a row, that this will be my team's year.
Part of me agrees but part of me see the individual talent on the Leafs and thinks, "It's better than what the Bruins have". Plus, the law of averages says we have to EVENTUALLY win... right? ;)

Remember, even a broken clock... Leafs in 7 !!!

I agree to a certain extent. But by allowing weak goals against every game it allows a team like Boston to play their game i.e. once they've got a lead they use a strong forecheck, protect the middle of the ice in their zone, hit everything that moves, take little chances in the offensive zone, etc. That second goal by Boston, a weak one ime, sucked the life out of the Leafs.

But I agree with you, our players have to find a way to score. It can't be a coincidence that every goalie we play against looks like a Vezina candidate. Last night, the vast majority of shots and tips were along the ice. Swayman was very good with his pads. I still say coaching is a huge problem, but no question this offence doesn't show up in the playoffs.

Would be be better off having signed Frederik Andersen ?

I think we would be.

That's alot of dancing around just to end up worse.

Frederik Andersen was a BRICK WALL

I used to be a fairly decent tennis player when I was much younger.

There was this older guy that really wasn't any more talented than I was, but I could never beat him no matter what I did. One day I asked him what was it that allowed him to keep beating me. His answer was simple, he just kept the ball in play until I made a mistake by hitting out of bounds, or into the net, or served up a soft one he could slam.

Exactly how these teams continually beat the Leafs. They just keep playing a safe game until the Leafs make the mistake and then pounce on it.

Last night it was a bad read between Reaves and Edmunson, a careless high sticking penalty and an unnecessary slashing penalty. 3 goals.

Years past it was,
  • Kerfoot's drop pass and later high stick on Hedman
  • Dermott's "spinnerama" against the Habs
  • Galch's OT disaster pass
  • A game 5 horrific line change against the CBJ's
  • Jake Gardiner in Game 7 vs the B's
  • etc. etc.
Just wait for them to f**k up and it'll likely get you 2 of the 4 wins you need.

It's structure and attention to detail. Or said another way, coaching.

Well said.

The combination of difference making talent falling apart because of stage fright, the cheap parts making mistakes and the goalie never being there to stop those big chances the other way just means Toronto ends up giving away the game before they even get into it.

We signed some of the lowest IQ guys in the league... I wouldn't say all their decision making is a coaching issue

I see Willy, Gio,Brodie,Timmins,Cade Webber, Gregor?, not sure if thats Jones with the pads on?
Six players (only one who is a regular) and a goalie at an optional skate after a 5-1 loss is ridiculous. Tell me again why coaching isn't one of our biggest problems. PK sucked, PP sucked more, and a defensive specialist who has missed two months of play due to injury is inserted to the PP in his first game back, and now an optional skate? They had nothing to work on? Makes me almost want to lose so we move on from Keefe.
