Hughes hasn't looked any better than Kakko.

Maybe some of you should actually, idk, WATCH THE GAMES. For example, I've seen Kakko's shot differential last night posted several times, yet I haven't seen anyone mention his great backcheck in the 1st period that saved a goal.

These guys have been used entirely differently by their coaches to start the season. It's only been a dozen games. Making definitive threads about either player is dumb.

+/- is a garbage stat, so who cares?

His xGF% being 31.36% is far more troubling and indicative of struggles so far.

Kreider is only at 33%. Zibanejad is at 37%. They're veterans and yet only marginally better than a rookie. Should we be concerned about them as well?

Yes, they have clearly not played well enough.

Saying Kakko hasn't played well isn't an indictment on his potential.

Suzuki with a +5. The kid is not the most talented of this draft, but he has the highest IQ for sure. He rarely makes mistake, what a smart kid.

Agreed and I hope that day comes ASAP, but in Kakko’s case, we’ve got far better metrics than +/- and a lot of them suggest that Kakko has actually been one of the very worst players in the NHL this year.
But no one is actually highlighting what he's doing wrong.

No one is comparing this to other busts as a way to show if it's truly worrying

So it feels like most of the posts are pointless in this thread

I have a theory that almost no one on hf actually knows hockey but everyone wants to LOOK like they know. So they use lazy arguments and stats with zero descriptions of actual play in order to create the appearance of hockey knowledge. fori annegotjink (what the actual f*** did my phone do here?) I think it's mostly for an ego boost.

This isn't even directed at you, more the majority of posts in this thread and on hf

He's really struggled, but people have to remember that top guys coming out of the draft and being strong players immediately is not actually the norm.

Remember a week ago when people were ****ting on Hughes cause he didnt have a goal in his first week and now he has 7. lol

jack hughes 7 goals? no jack hughes has 7 points. 3 of those are goals. Also 3 of his points came in one game. Its really too early on both sides. He had a bad first 6 games and a pretty good last 7. They are both important to acknowledge

This should be a disclaimer on the home page.

I'm not trying to imply either are bad players, but it's clear both were massively, massively over rated, most likely based on A) Rival teams owning picks #1 and 2 and B) The trend of the past few top end picks stepping in right away and being an impact franchise player.

Hughes has 3 G, 4 A = 7 points, and all three of his goals are PP goals.

Kakko has 3 G, 2 A = 5 points, with 1 PP goal.

I'd be careful gloating right now. Hughes is showing obvious skill but he's very much a WIP still.

They are both WIPs.

But here's the thing. If someone said Hughes "has clearly not been playing well enough", yourself and 95% of the Devs board would pitch a fit. Heck, I haven't even made a comment nearly that aggressive and have gotten attacked repeatedly for just suggesting some things he needs to work on.

See, right now reading this you are probably going BUT HUGHES #s ARE WAY BETTER, YOU ARE BEING A HATER. Well, no, they are being used entirely differently, Kakko hadn't been getting much PP time, and most importantly Hughes' #s have been bad as well when he hasn't played with Hall and Palms. If Kakko had played with Zibs and Panarin away from opponent top lines most of the time, then we could try to make that comparison.

Kaapo spoke about his first 10 games woes, and he kept doubting himself due to the “10-game mark”, wanted to make the team. As soon as it was the 11th game, he’s looked like a beast. Besides that you can tell he was adjusting to the NHL game, he’s looked VERY confident and comfortable the last 3-4 games.
