I really do not think Johnsson loses his spot after tonight. I see this guy coming in a being a force on the PP and may even score a couple of goals tonight. I have a strong feeling this guy is going to produce tonight.

He shouldn't have signed. Unless he doesn't have a clue he should have known that he wasn't going to play much when he signed.

McKenzie: No one was more surprised Leivo signed an extension than me

At the time, it was suggested that he must have received some assurances that he'd get a regular roster spot moving forward, or at the very least, into next year (no JvR).

I think he signed based on that ackowledgment, saw how things played out, and then realized that he'd made a mistake - so that's where the trade request chatter came from recently.

As for the contract - I think he had to sign. He has so little NHL experience, there's no guarantee he would have found that sort of deal in free agency. I know it's convenient to say SOMEONE would have taken a risk on him, but you never know

Johnsson isn't going back to the AHL this season. He is last seasons Kapanen for our playoff run. He will seize the moment and solidify his spot in the lineup heading into the playoffs. I really like a 4th line of Johnsson-Plekanec-Komarov for the playoffs. Hard nosed line with grit, speed and scoring ability. Lines for playoffs should be:

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
JVR-Bozak-Kapanen
Marleau-Kadri-Marner
Johnsson-Plekanec-Komarov

Problem is there is no spot for Brown and I like him too. What happens if Johnsson produces....who is the odd man out????
Johnsson was only an emergency recall, so he can't stay unless we waive or trade someone else.
It's more likely he gets sent back down, imo. Let him lead the Marlies in the playoffs. If the Marlies are out before the Leafs, call him up.

I agree, trading away 2nd round picks for 4th line C year after year for 20+ games is not smart IMO. Its not like these guys will put us over the top.

While I think one can make a decent argument in favour of both 4C trades - I do suspect if Dubas or Hunter is GM next season the team will be more reluctant to trade high picks so frequently

Edit: trades not taxes

I know its spell check, but the word taxes really is noticeable here. Not making fun or anything but its just pretty funny:laugh:

Wow thats just unlucky. Do you know what kind of minutes hes been playing down in the AHL? His stat-line looks pretty impressive for his first year in north america

Sorry I don't, I read the article in passing and really didn't pay much attention to the details. I was multi-tasking when I was reading the article.

Is a pick in the 50s really that high?

Excited for Johnsson tonight, but man I feel so sorry for Leivo - overlooked, yet again.

I'm not sure, if I was in Leivo's shoes, whether I'd be salty or sad.
This has nothing at all to do with Leivo.

Johnsson's performance will have more of a bearing on what they do with JVR.

Maybe we should wait and see how he actually plays before jumping to these conclusions.

I'm very doubtful that he would displace Connor Brown.

I think what happens with JVR has already been decided. He will get offers from other GM's we won't be matching. All of our sophmores are scoring less this year. You add Kapanen and Johnson and you let someone else pay JVR $6.5M. He hasn't been that great this year, especially of late. No big goals, no ot winners, no go ahead in a tight game. He is a PP specialist and that wont be our weakness next year .

Nice optimism but this is just an audition for next year. Unless there's an injury this is our lineup heading into the playoffs.

Hyman Matthews Nylander
Marleau Kadri Marner
JVR Bozak Brown
Komarov Plekanec Kapanen

It has everything to do with Leivo - he's overlooked again for a winger spot in this lineup.

The JvR decision is made - he's not coming back

Maybe.

You didn't manage to catch the game tonight, did you?
