I think a lot 3v3 OT is speed.
There is no real positional hockey taking place out there in this format - the ice is wide open for anyone who can take that space.
Players need to have speed to open up space or beat the one on one situations that are in.
And if they are not fast (or quick) enough to open up space, they will need to be able to win one on one battles - and that's not Cole's strong point either.

I'm not against Cole getting more ice in OT - I'd like to see more of what he can do in that format and that's really the only way we'll know if he can be effective in that situation.

I think it's much more about puck speed then skating speed. Also Cole scored or was involved in numerous 3 on 3 goals for the Moose when he was there.

I'm just arguing about doing things that other teams do in 3 on 3. We must be one of the only teams that doesn't cycle through its top skilled players in OT.

Also it's not just Cole, how do you leave the hottest player in Gabe off the ice.

Just strange coaching by Bones in that game state.

Two issues on the PP are back... can't seem to figure out zone entry and cross ice pass or die

Maybe PP1
Nino and Vilardi netfront
Scheif, Jomo, Ehlers up high - shoot and look for scraps

PP2
Barron and iafallo netfront
Gus, samberg, perfetti

While Maurice played his stars to death in OT, bones errs on the side of defence in OT...

In the meantime, get Lafallo off 2nd line. We have better players like Barron and Nino.
I agree all the way on this. I'd have Barron or Nino on that 2nd line, and use Iafallo as a backchecking forward on the 4th line. I guess you could put Iafallo on the 3rd line as well, and take Nino's spot.

When Connor comes back this will be sorted out, and Iafallo will be moving on down. In the meantime tho, I'd still have Barron in his spot all daylong. Barron is big and fast, with decent scoring hands.

Just seems weird that this team is buying in 110% at 5v5 and getting great results but they're not listening on the powerplay? When it clearly sucks and isn't getting good results?
Sure does.

Maybe it has to do with 5v5 being mostly structure and systems and the team has bought in and committed it to memory, while the pp is more about creativity and giving what's taken?

Honestly just a wild guess.

They are listening probably. They just don’t have a one shot scorer.and the D men ain’t scaring anyone with their shots.

We missing a buff and laine
First of all, if your powerplay is designed around a one-shot scorer and he's gonna be out for the next 6-8 weeks, then maybe you need to go back to the drawing board.

Also, the Jets powerplay was just as anemic even with Connor. From October to December 10: worst in the NHL in xGF/60, 2nd worst in CF/60, 2nd worst in FF/60, 4th worst in Shots/60, 10th worst in Goals/60. 23rd out of 32 (25th percentile) converting at 17.7%. Since Connor went out, the results are pretty similar. The 23rd ranked powerplay converting at 16.7% (the Corsis/xGFs and all that are pretty much the same).

So if the big shooter is only making a 1% difference in the conversion rate of the league's 23rd ranked powerplay, and the team is apparently buying what the coaches are selling everywhere else, I think the logical conclusion is that there's a problem with the overall strategy.

^ great post @Gm0ney

5 on 5 seems to build off last year what bones wanted - very happy with those results even in more disappointing games recently like the Chicago one. Enjoyable to watch these guys.

But special teams has regressed despite the same coaches and mostly (i would argue upgrade pp unit, up for debate if pk is downgraded)

Last year never worried about being on the PK this year it’s a lot more often noticing some clenching of the cheeks

I wonder if they changed some special teams strategy or something. Special teams was a stronger point of last years squad

Teams will adjust their PP because of our PK last year... every team knows what each other does on special teams... there are no secrets with the amount of footage teams watch of each other

It's up to the coaching staff to adjust to their adjustments, and I don't think we're seeing that on either the PP or the PK. It's one thing to come up with a scheme that works, but another to have to adapt it once it isn't

As far as the PP goes, even if they put bodies in front of the net and kept throwing pucks there, something is bound to happen.

55 stickhandles for 15 seconds in one place, then tries to force an impossible pass cross ice. Have two guys charge the net and cause some greasy goals.

Other than that, good game.

Seems the book is out on a few of our PP regulars.

Always thought Spacek would have been a good player to anchor our PP. so quick/shifty.

I think there is a pP specialist role role for the super skilled tiny players that can’t Make the nhl/ahl.

The good thing is that the Jets have a lot of time to fix the PP and due to the success of the 5 on 5 play there don't have a gun to their head to get it right immediately.

Wheeler sure would be nice to have for his PP impact but the Jets have got to make do with what they have.

Not worth $8.whatever million for an extra 2 percentage points on the PP.

That's true - we were 23rd in the league for PP percentage last year instead of 24th...!!

Things are starting to tighten up a bit in the Central. 2 teams 6 points out of the front runners and one 7, and the Wild are surging and are 8 back. This b2b is critical.

If the Jets lose both the Wild are only 4 back with gp tied.

The Jets can really stomp on their dreams with 4 clean points, which would be the best Xmas present ever!!

Also to balance out the doom - of the Jets win their 3 games in hand on the Canucks they're first in the west :)

Nice, and the Jets are only 1 point behind Colorado with 2 games in hand right now. Winning both of these games against Minnesota would be very good like you said.

That is where coaching comes in. If a guy or a line doesn’t “have it” that might, like you said no big deal it happens to everyone, but then why did 55 play almost 25 mins including multiple shifts in OT? Play someone else a bit more if 55 isn’t going that night.
That was the problem. I thought he played well .....just got caught on long shifts multiple times. That can't happen.

Now that's my kind of optimism.

Two afternoon games to close out the year, hope the Jets don't play sleepy.

Hockey might not be the game for you, then.

You expect it sometimes.

It happens to the Jets all too often - which means they do it to themselves. They make opposition goalies look good when they usually are not.

You go on about it yourself in the earlier part of the same post I am replying to. You apply it specifically to the PP but It is part and parcel of the same thing. If they scored more often on the PP, I might never have made my post.

pretty much every fan base says this, it's not unique to the jets, bad teams still win in the nhl and majority of the time it's because their goalie has a good game
