The part about the impact of a goalie being lower than generally believed is actually a feeling I've long held, even though this analysis doesn't take into account the psychological factor (e.g. how playing without Price affects the psyche of the team). The goalie excuse MB & MT want us to believe is hogwash like most of us already know. Losing Price has definitely hurt us, but to blame our collapse solely on his injury is intellectually disingenuous.

The article illustrates MTs ineptness further by raising the MT/Bylsma example (which MT haters here often raise).

One can only hope our seemingly anti intellectual GM wakes up and adopts a more modern approach putting more weight on analytics to help take better asset management decisions moving forward. Firing his foxhole buddy and tank commander after the end of this regular season where we've witnessed a collapse of epic proportions would be a good start.

Losing Price wouldn't have set us back this far with a competent coach and GM.

1.Galchenyuk would have been centering the top 2 lines all season.
2.Hudon would have been given an extended look in a top 6 role where IMO He would contribute.
3. A competent GM would have acquired a better goalie (Reimer anyone?) as soon as Price went down the second time.

That's cute, but the Habs have basically been 5th in CF% all season. They got guys like Byron and Mitchell who had great advanced stats and they (Therrien, Pacioretty, Subban) preached getting pucks at the net all pre-season. They went at the "modern approach" as far they could.

Our problems have nothing to with shot volume, it's shot efficiency that's the problem. We miss our grade A Chances like crazy and we have too many ******* on this team that don't fight enough for better locations on the ice, not to shoot, but to shoot and score.

We need a real good shooter (finisher) This would also make our PP better Hopefully we find one in off season

Analytically, the consensus would be that goalies are not as valuable, that the difference between your (reigning league MVP) Carey Price (of the Canadiens) and an average NHL goalie is only about two or three wins a year.

Pretty huge statement there by Schukers and I care to disagree. Our offense is ****, but it was the same last year. Losing Price did cost us much more than 2-3 wins.

And as for our SAT stats this year, it's very simple: our guys are asked to shoot pucks at da net. From any angle, if you're in the o-zone, you shoot pucks at da net. Also, our dmen take a lot of shots.

All of that means that, yes, we can have good shooting for/against ratios in a vacuum, but it doesn't mean much in the proper context of how goals are scored in a hockey game.

A team that plays good hockey generates good SAT stats and scoring chances. That's what you want to see.

A team that plays like crap usually generates poor SAT stats and little scoring chances. Like we did last year. But it is perfectly possible to fix the SAT part by asking your guys to shoot from everywhere.

And yes, I think our coaching staff is probably too dumb to realize they've got it all backwards.

SAT is just a metric that can help assessing the team. It's not an end in itself, like some stat-averse guys think it is used/perceived.
