He doesn't want to be here either. I don't know if anyone else saw the tweet I did a week or so ago. I think it was a tsn guy talking about liles and was mentioning how we had been interested in the past. He said liles had turned down a trade to us. I assume that's during his TO days. I think we tried to get him as a free agent, and from a decent source refused to be traded here so even though I think he could help we don't want a guy who doesn't want to be here. Can't afford him anyway.

Liles would have been a good option years ago when we were actually interested. But I'm more than happy that we passed on him now. I would only take him if the Leafs could eat a significant portion of his contract for the remainder of his deal. Even then, he'd be an absolute last resort at this stage in his career.

trade for Meszaros e5

If Philly ate some of the salary (which I think they would, given that Holmgren is trying to get rid of a defensemen regardless of cost)

With Gleason out, and the team sending Murphy down to Charlotte, I'm down for either Meszaros or Liles, with their respected teams eating some of their salary..

We couldn't fit him even if we wanted him. Toronto would have to retain some of the cap hit for him to go anywhere, and they'd prefer to bury him in the AHL rather than trade him and be forced to do that. He'll clear easily.

I would have been surprised if we took him, but figured somebody would. You were right, though.

He could've gotten more on the market is the scary part. A goal scorer who can create on his own and is overall pretty consistent. Rare qualities these days.

I'd glady tack on an extra $3.25M on to Tuomo Ruutu's contract to make him actually play and score 35 goals a season and not skate like an 85-year old man

For the next 8 years, until an age where virtually nobody even cracks 25 goals?

Seriously, though. Kessel will be carrying an $8m cap hit when he's 34 years old. That is going to be an untradeable contract.

In 8 years the cap will be $100 million anyway so what's the difference? It'll be about the time Seth Jones hits the market and Philly gives him $17 mil a season for 7 years. Then they'll lock them out the next season and try to cut salaries by 50%.

We think these things now. But in 8 years, the cap is $85M, and your average 3rd line winger is making $4.5m per....and an $8M contract isn't all that outrageous.

Travel back in time back 5 or 6 years, and imagine a guy with Ruutu or Gleason's numbers making $5M per season! You'd choke on your $9 stadium beer!

This is exactly what people said when Rick Nash, Dany Heatley and Zach Parise scored contracts smaller than this one. Guaranteed 35+ goal production... franchise player... modest cap hit in just a few short years.

We're talking about a soft winger who is almost certainly at his scoring peak, playing in a high-pressure market with an introverted personality and one of the biggest contracts in the league. What could go wrong!

How do you feel about Corey Perry's contract?

kessel has answered every question, and still gets questioned. he's been a dominant player in that market since he got there, hes one of the only guys who can create like that on his own, and hes still a young guy. how would he have gotten less? he even showed he could do it in the playoffs. people love to hate the guy, but he's one of the most dominant wingers in the league and is just hitting his stride.

TO can afford it, and will always play to the cap. his contract unless he gets seriously injured, (a risk with any star contract) this wont hurt TO at all.

Ian White still isn't signed anywhere. Food for thought. Might be able to grab him fairly cheap since it's looking more and more like Europe for him every day. Could bring some grit in with Gleason out. I know it didn't go well for him last time here, but the coaching staff is 100% changed since then, so it'd have to be a clean slate.
