Lol so did i.

Also, screw retiring 13. Datsyuk walked out on a contract.

If you're not going to retire #91 then you can't retire #13, either.

Yes, Hronek will get some looks with the Red Wings post trade deadline.

Not to de-rail this thread, but what Fedorov did and what Datsyuk did aren't even close to similar.

One held up the team more than once for money. The other left because being away from home was straining his relationship with his daughter.

Fedorov ultimately left after the organization pulled two contract offers as a UFA. That the Wings have never owned up on their end of that is extremely disappointing. They have allowed that negative narrative to be out there to help cover up for the fact they practically dared him to leave at the end.

One backed out on agreement and made more money on his next agreement. Say what you want Fedorov's contract issues happened during negotiations. Datsyuk walked out on a signed agreement.

What Fedorov did wasn't worse than Datsyuk and I have never understood this argument.

You can believe his daughter argument, he wound up not moving home into her city and every contract he signed with Detroit had that known factor in it. Wish Datsyuk all the best how he left stunk big time.

If they don't plan on putting up Fedorov who was a better player than they shouldn't hang 13 at all and if Hronek is comfortable with the little bit of heat he will get for putting it on he should get his number. I wouldn't give him anything for it as I would have no problem if the organization decides Datsyuk fell short of the honor. He is borderline for what it takes to be retired by the Wings. It is a really tough honor to achieve. Fedorov actually helps make his argument.

That's purely an opinion, and you've always had a weird vex against Datsyuk.

It is probably his golden boy status in all honesty. For me he is the 5th best player on this team during my lifetime. I am guessing there aren't many that would list him there. I rank Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom and Zetterberg in front of him. It is very close between him and Shanahan for me, though Pavel played longer in Detroit so I give him the edge. In terms of pure favorites I also am just a huge fan of Vladdy and Drapes in terms of guys I yes like more than Pavel as a fan.

That he got a pass for skipping on his contract was perplexing, especially after people went nuts on Fedorov who I think the team threw under the bus to hide their responsibility and I think was far superior in every area.

You guys/gals think it is a weird vex, I just think he is overrated by a lot of Wings fans and having a counter opinion on it apparently makes me a hater. I like Pavel, really enjoyed watching him play. But no I don't look at everything he did with rose colored glasses.

With what it takes to have your number retired in Detroit, I could see them reissuing #13.

When they passed over Shanahan, Kelly, Goodfellow and some of the others I don't think it is a shoe-in at all that Pavel goes up. I would like to think him and Zetterberg are tied together in terms of this honor but I am not sure that is the case. Z is still making his case, Pavel's is closed and they haven't talked much about this honor which might mean he is close but it isn't going to happen. They talk about Z going up you never hear much on that front on Pavel's #13.

Again it will be telling if Hronek wants it what they do. They have blocked #91 from a couple guys that have worn the number so perhaps they know deep down they will honor Fedorov. Until they do I struggle with how you would ever put up #13 or #40.

I'd be shocked if they gave Hronek #13, I'm not counting on it at all.

Personally I think #13, #91, and #40 should all go up in the rafters. #6 should go back up too. They're being overly petty about the whole thing, IMO. They're going to have to drop the standards a little bit, or god knows when the next time a jersey will go up at the LCA.

The Aurie situation is probably the most embarrassing thing the Ilitch family has done with the Wings.

Hronek might not want the number anyway.

So I don't mean to tell him he has to wear it for some agenda. But it would be interesting if he asked.

I am not really a huge fan though of them faux retiring numbers either. I love Vladdy but if you aren't going to rafter him I don't understand the point of never re-issuing 16. You could even wait for somebody really special and get his approval I guess.

Hronek is really coming on though and should be called up for a cup of coffee soon here in my opinion. Now a lot of times on first callup you don't get a choice but he is the first guy we get to see challenge whether or not this could happen.

I'd probably slide Konstantinov in ahead of Datsyuk. That limo ride shortened his career but he was such a great D. I'll join you in the hater camp, too.

LOL.
Look I'm a huge fan of both guys.

But Datsyuk left in the middle of a contract in a league with a salary cap.
Fedorov never did any such thing.

Agreed on 13, 91, and 40.

Don't care about 6 very much, being unfamiliar with his legacy.
Statistically, he was a good player in a 6 team league. His best finish was the year he led the team in goals and finished 4th in points.
He usually finished anywhere from 12th to 30th in points.

We're talking about 8 or 9 teams.

In a 31 team league that means you're talking about a guy who one year finished like 13th in scoring, once or twice finished 36th and often finished 60th.

Definitely not a Hall of Famer. And not deserved of a number raising.

But what I would say is that once a team raises a number, you don't take it down unless the guy does something a little short of rape and murder.

But, since it's been almost 40 years now and the thing has been down nearly as long it was supposed "retired," I really don't see the point in retiring it.

While I agree Hronek has likely earned a call up at some point after Green is dealt, I doubt they do anything to specifically open space for him. I would however imagine that if he has a good camp/preseason next year, he could make Ouellet or Jensen expendable enough to waive or trade. Obviously, he'll wear a different number than #13 on the big club. They probably just toss him #4.

As for Fedorov and Datsyuk, both departures offered a silver lining, so trying to rank which was worse is moot.

IMO, Datsyuks departure seemed to have more to do with money than his daughter. If you read Ken Daniels "If These Walls Could Talk", there's a part in the book about Daniels sitting next to Datsyuk on the plane during his last season and listening to Pavel complain about how much the players contribution to escrow was rising. Considering escrow hit as high as 18% in 15/16, and his salary for 16/17 was to drop down to $5.5M, after taxes and escrow, he was probably looking at making a good bit less than he signed for in the KHL for this and last season. That said, the Wings were at least able to salvage another D prospect out the whole thing, so unless Chychrun wins some Norris trophies and/or Hronek and Cholowski become the next Kindl and Smith, the Red Wings made out fine.

As for Fedorov, his departure ended up being a blessing in disguise... Had he signed one of the Red Wings $10M/season offers, the Red Wings would have faced coming into the cap era with Fedorov and Lidstrom occupying a hair under 40% of the $39M cap... They would've had to do a lot more trimming other than Hatcher/McCarty/etc., and one of the casualties could've been having to trade Datsyuk or lose him to the RSL, since they barely got him to sign for 05/06 in reality. I also wonder how Red Wings fans would've viewed Fedorov had he stayed with Detroit and his game dropped off like it did post lockout with his cap hit either 2nd highest or tied for highest. Especially when you consider that by having to adjust to carry Fedorov's likely high cap hit, the team more than likely wouldn't have been as deep and talented as they eventually were for the first few seasons out of the lockout. Then again, the Wings probably don't trade for Lang if they keep Fedorov, so they potentially still have a 1st rounder in 2004 (which was used by Washington on Mike Green) and Fleischmann, and whatever they might have gotten having to trade somewhat to get cap compliant.

#13 and #91 should still hang from the LCA ceiling someday, IMO.

I think you're completely out to lunch on Datsyuk ....
but Datsyuk leaving Detroit the way he did was worse than Fedorov signing the offer sheet or leaving to Anaheim.

But who cares?
Really?

These guys made Red Wings hockey a treat since 1991.

The Ilitches got rich on this entertainment, and parlayed the Red Wings into the Tigers, into a sweetheart arena deal into a casino, etc.

So people get mad when the hockey player makes a business decision?

By the way, we all should have known that last Datsyuk deal had risk involved.
He was a guy coming of a couple fairly impactful knee and ligament issues.

And Holland signed him to a 3 year deal at a 35 years old -- despite the fact that centers don't age well.

Datsyuk was done as an elite NHLer. What's the point of keeping him around as a shell of himself?

And to the same extent, check out Fedorov's production after leaving Detroit.

How happy would you have been with that had he signed the infamous 5-year, $50M deal?
Yes, it would have been reduced to $7,6M after the cap was installed.

But as skilled as Ken Holland was at keeping a core together after the salary cap, I don't think he could have pulled it off is Fedorov was still around at $7,6M.

1) Yes. Fedorov did worse by sitting out most of 96-97, but actually signing the offer sheet or leaving as a UFA? Neither of those is a glaring offense or at least shouldn't be. The long long holdout was pretty bad though. Datsyuk and his agent pushed for a 3 or 5 year deal and wanted out of it like a week later, even though it was signed as a 35+ deal. He would have skipped out with two years to go if the Wings hadn't threatened to toll his contract if he tried it. Datsyuk knew he was nearing the end of his career and he pushed for a multi-year pact. So, he doesn't get a pass on that.

I get mad on Datsyuk's part, because he could have gone year to year on his contracts, like Nick did when he was wavering on wanting to go home. There was no impetus besides wanting more guaranteed cash in him wanting to get a multi-year deal.

And he was done as an elite NHLer? He was still a PPG #1C the year before he went away (aka the 1st year of his extension). He had 49p in 66 games in his last year when he was clearly slowed. He was still an elite NHL player at 36 years of age.

2) On Fedorov... yeah, I would have been. Team would have still been loaded for bear up front, so his stats wouldn't have nosedived like they would have when he left to go play in Anaheim and later Columbus. It would be like if Evgeni Malkin suddenly left Pittsburgh to go play in Buffalo. His personal stats would take a gigantic hit and look way worse. They would likely have had to deal Fedorov or Lidstrom in the aftermath of the lockout, but they'd have gotten a buttload back for either one of them.

1) Fedorov was a free agent. As a restricted free agent, he signed a contract in accordance with CBA rules. Why wouldn't he?
Why should an NHLer just accept whatever an owner offers?
Grow up.
2) Datsyuk was not an elite player. His even strength point/60 had fallen to 1.31 - the lowest of his career (5 on 5 numbers)
To give you an idea, 1.31 ranks behind AA, Larkin, Zetterberg, Frk, Bertuzzi, Booth, Nyquist, Sheahan, Abdelkader, and Darren Helm this year.
He made his bones on the PP. And yes, he was still a nice PP asset.
But he was finished as an elite NHLer.
3) Fedorov's stats had already started their decline. Hewas between 62 and 68 points for five straight years before he hit 83 points at 33 years old, just before his UFA year. At 34 years old in Anaheim, he had a nice season. Then came the lockout at 35. At 36 and 37, he hit the wall. He became a 40 point guy.
You think he'd have continued producing at 60-70 points in Detroit at 36 and 37 and 38 years old? And been worth $7.6M?
That's a farce.

Fedorov did this team a favor by not accepting that contract.

Hronek’s on a better scoring pace than Kronwall was in his first AHL season (25 games). Close to matching Kronwall’s pace in his first full AHL season (0,60PPG vs 0,69PPG). Hronek’s several years younger which should be noted.

Just a comparison to the last legit top-pairing D we drafted.
