Amazing value for someone in the last 2 years of a UFA contract.
Especially considering that the market value is relative to the current cap, and the cap has unexpectedly stagnated since then. Without Covid, that market value in year 6 of 7 would probably be closer to 10m. And this is with him having the worst shooting luck of his career this year.

Kept Kadri and Hyman? Signed Pietrangelo? Signed Markstrom? Ian Cole?

Why did we have to strap ourselves in immediately in 2018? Sign some plugs until we could fill the holes with the right players.
Keeping Kadri and Hyman is the worst case of Monday morning GM I’ve ever heard of.

Nobody was keeping Kadri to watch his 3rd Playoff suspension happen in Toronto and not Colorado… and nobody wanted to give Hyman the bag he was chasing… literally nobody.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. Strapping in for 7 years of 50% of our cap was a mistake now and then as many said at the time. You can ignore the last part of my post if you want but we didn’t have to commit to pieces that weren’t necessary.

It amazes me how many people are blindly still supporting this signing even after seeing the results. That’s something special there.

You’re just gonna have to be amazed then… even if we had of acquired Pietro instead of JT… there’s no guarantee we advance farther than the one round we have with Tavares.

I would even put money that Pietro would not be the player scoring in OT to eliminate Tampa in the first round either.

Even if JT had signed for $7 million (which would have shocked the entire NHL), there’s no guarantee that we go farther with an extra $4 million to spend.

IMO, it’s just not worth the whining and complaining over something that is out of the fans control.

Some folks around here actually come across like they really despise JT… it’s like having bitter Islander fans in house.

Everyone knows UFAs will suck at the end of their deal.

The fact that Tavares was slow to start made this even more obvious

JT came home so his kids could play Ontario hockey. Smart move.

This reminds me of those games where you guess how many marbles are in the glass jar.

Closest to the actual number wins something. Except we're guessing how much the boat anchor weighs. And the prize is nothing.

Apparently most fans think Tavares is anything from $4M to $8M overpaid.

I don't think anyone is arguing Tavares is earning his fair keep. The best anyone can do is say it was expected to age poorly. Nobody is defending his compensation as appropriate though.

This is where we are at.

Everything fans said when Tavares was signed has come true. The chickens have come home to roost. The most celebrated day since the Tavares signing will be the day he comes off the books.

How much you wanna bet they use his cap space to sign another over the hill big name UFA to a retirement contract.
How much you wanna bet they re-sign Tavares to a $5-6 million AAV 3 year deal? Not because he's any good, but because it would be "mean" to discard your captain. They don't do "mean" in Toronto.

Depends on how much his jersey is still selling more than anything I suppose.

A Matthews jersey with a "C" would be a huge seller after the season he's having though. I don't see why anyone should blink if Treliving fired Keefe and stripped Tavares of the "C" should they fail in the playoffs again. It's his team now, it's his right to name a new captain.

If Tavares doesn't like it he's more than free to take his $11M cap hit and request a trade somewhere else.

What's the point of this discussion in year 6 of 7? The Leafs organization shat the bed and didn't capitalize on those first 3-4 years of the deal. Complaining about this now is completely pointless
So glad guys like you aren't the GM of the Leafs...
It's a defeatist type of attitude to take tbh
What kind of NHL GM signs any 7 year contract with a player with the understanding that the player would be worth less than half his cap value, an obvious detriment and would also have to capitalize properly in the first half of the contract knowing this to be the case???

The answer is none.

The truth is, Dubas and Co. basically $hit their pajamas and thought Tavares was something more than he turned out to be and over bid for his services, regardless of San Jose's rumoured 13 million offer... and they definitely thought he'd still be a high quality 2nd line center throughout the entirety of his 7 year contract... not barely a 3rd line winger, 5v5 defensive liability, face offs specialist. The guys brain looks rocked, took another bad hit in last game too where he had a hard time getting up and back into the play... he did score the game winner though VIDEO BELOW

Lmao. Guaranteed you'd bitch if they didn't sign him when he was interested in coming here. The revisionist history folks who act like they knew it all and would do better from their couch are the biggest and most hilarious hypocrites of all. And for the record I'm no Dubas defender.

Only bitches bitch... you wouldn't talk to my face like that for sure... I just tell the truth and that scares you like a little boy looking under his bed :(

Never wanted Tavares, never liked Tavares... told my brother the day he signed it was a terrible deal and would be huge liability right from the start... Dubas turned out to be a less than ideal GM for the Leafs... never supported him either

The difference between people like you and I is that I have experience, intelligence and foresight... and you seem to have a lot of fear based dissonance...

Thanks for the chat, hope that clears it up for you, no hard feelings, all the best of luck to you, cheers

We all knew the last two years of this contract would hurt. Most were saying they expect him to be an approximate 20 goal/50 point player by year 7.

But it was supposed to still be worth it because he was finally playing with fellow elite players sheltered by Matthews as #2 center. The 48 goal guy he was year one? Well, we expected him to be that for the first 4-5 years. Not ONE year.

It ended up being an absolute horror show of a contract and the main reason of what it did to our internal cap structure. From the moment that contract was penned it turned out young core from a future elite team to a future good team. And that's what we've been. "Pretty good". Decent in the regular season. Not Presidents Trophy good. But decent. And mediocre (at best) in the playoffs.

It's always cool when keyboard warriors low-brow insult me but the second I defend myself I get blocked lmao

HFboards can censor truth or differing opinions more efficiently than CNN, that's for sure lol

What a simpleton this guy must be though... resorting immediately to insults and name calling... so copy and paste that $hit lol ain't nobody care lol

@Machinae @ToneDog @1specter must be bum-chum w/ @TrollStomper

I believe people like you are what's wrong with this world and more specifically men in general...

Answer me this and maybe I'll change my mind;

What's the most important thing to you?

Ahhhhhhh Covid, excuse number 17 for a poorly constructed team.

we all knew this was coming when we signed him. if we never had a flat cap for multiple years. likely never would have been an issue. was still a good signing for the time but maybe was little overkill for C.

My instincts tell me Tavares is going to show up come playoffs, have a little more bite to his game, a little more disdain for the opponent.

If he has weaker matchups he has to exploit them and playing either Boston or Florida would probably provide some extra motivated. He can fire up at any time and just go on a roll when it matters most.

There wasn't even any excuse for anything. Do you just see the word covid and start yelling "EXCUSE!" at it?
It's a fact that it existed and changed the current cap ceiling, and thus it's relevant to a metric that is relative to the current cap ceiling.

That extra 4m would have turned into more like 10m or more when the kids contracts came up. With 10m you could get a couple good dmen after you add the 2-3m from the junky ones we ended up with. Probably spread a little in forward depth on top.

For Example Only. We have 2x 4m just ok defenders. Well with 10m we could convert that into 2x 9m defenders. Or 2x 7m defenders and added the 4m to another UFA making say 3m and instead got another 7m player.

The big mistake is people say what is an extra 4m, its when you add it to your b grade players salary and convert to an A player. Or convert the bottom end of your C grade depth team into B grade. Suddenly you're sniffing a cup.

Another example. With just 4m you could take 4 1m dollar players and go get 4 2m players in FA. Entice better depth to come play.
