How do you rebuild it? Start by tearing it down.

Over this summer and the 2019 trade deadline do the following:

1. Does Price want to be part of a rebuild for the next 2-4 years? No? Trade him if possible.
2. Trade Max Pacioretty
3. Trade Brendan Gallagher
4. Trade Alex Galchenyuk
5. Trade Karl Alzner
6. Trade Jeff Petry

Maximize your returns with the future in mind. Gallagher should return a small fortune. Gally and Patches will both get solid returns. Build through the draft, and put in the pain and suffering while hoping you get lucky with picks. Prioritize centres and defenceman whenever possible. Be transparent in starting this process with the fans and media so that young players don't have to develop in a hostile environment of failed expectations.

And hope we get lucky with available centers. Because the best long term plan is always to invest in lottery tickets and hope for the best. Don't build slowly by things you can control, just hope that there is some in atom right now who will be this franchises white knight who will save us from ourselves, if we are lucky to get him.
