I've always assumed that Tripp's projection onto soft-euro players is his ego's defensive mechanism, triggered from his glory days of being a terrible goaltender.

I paid close attention to Semin tonite.
* He is not lazy defensively but he is somewhat careless at times. There is a difference.
* He has much better vision than I thought he did. Made some fantastic cross-ice passes that we, of course, couldn't finish.
*Our 1st PP unit has the potential to be absolutely lethal. I mean a possible 30% conversion rate lethal.
I thought Bowman looked really good out there. He is NHL ready and is ahead of Boychuk in the pecking order no doubt.
The JR trades of Dumo and Alt are really bothering me right now. Alt was given away for free. Dumo was part of a massively steep price for JStaal and I really wonder if Sutter and the #8 overall wouldn't have got the deal done. We REALLY need to re-build our defense from the farm on up. Tossing in and giving away defensive prospects is not the way to do it.

****. I just saw that Pyatt goal, the first one, on Sportscenter. You guys undersold the **** out of that one man, that's the goal of the year so far! Alley-oop tip-in, that's not a shot, that's a chest-level saucer. That was freaking amazing!

It wouldn't have. And yeah it made no sense to give away Alt, but let's not overrated him that much. He's still not projected to be that great.

Trading Dumoulin is going to be a regret of JRs for years to come. He should have given away every Checker player if that's what it took to keep Dumoulin. The Canes top 6 defenders are weak, and the next 3 or 4 guys in waiting aren't any better.

Holy **** is Faulk good. Stamkos didn't get a single look in all night with Faulk tailing his ass.
I thought JR was crazy when he was pimping Faulk but... WOW! He knew exactly what to do with Stamkos, and contained him all night.
Sanguinetti is terrible. Kill him.
Corvo was passable tonight.
Semin is very good. Even better than last game. He's doing what is expected, which is carrying E. Staal while Eric is in one of his slumps.
If this is the version of Jordan Staal we are going to see for the next 10 years, we are boned. I'll chalk it up to having no chemistry with anyone in the lineup yet, but so far he has done nothing other than dump and chase and crash the net. He does have the north-south game of Eric, but none of the creativity. It's the second game (I'll give him a couple of seasons to grow), but something I have noticed.
There is just a lack of chemistry in the offense, and a lack of one more responsible defender in the defense. If McBain comes back and plays 4th dman to Pitkanen's 3rd, then we can demote Harrison-Corvo to 10 minutes of ES a night against 4th liners, and Sanguinetti to the ECHL. That's a passable defense, at least to avoid the gong show that has been going on.
This is the second game in a row that Cam and the defense allow a goal immediately after our offense establishes some solid momentum. It's a back breaker.

Every move JR has done is the worst ever right? Nevermind the fact that Brian Dumoulin is a -8 on a bad team. I'd be willing to bet if JR sat on this trade people would bet freaking out about not acquiring a #2 center like Jordan Staal when the opportunity presents itself. He has been fine. The Staals have never been known for their creativity, so it's no surprise that Jordan hasn't shown much there. But the strength and the hockey sense are.
I swear this board gets so unvisitable when the slightest thing goes wrong. Can we at least give it 5 games before this place becomes a sideshow?

Besides unloading Kaberle, JR hasn't one anything worth bragging about.

Pens fan coming in peace. Went to the game tonight (I was the a hole sitting by the glass in the offensive zone in a Pens Jordan Staal jersey). Wanted to share a few thoughts from an neutral perspective.
You guys are mostly right about semin. He played well but not great, he's got to shoot the puck to be effective. I say this with no disrespect towards any player or forum member but Semin has the best shot on the this team. He NEEDS to use it.
Eric Staal- typical early season slow start for him, loved him getting a little chippy at the end. It'll come together in a few games.
Jordan Staal- I don't think the Canes are really using him correctly. He is good at either creating space or using it. Not both. To get the most out of him he needs to line up with people who can either finish plays or create space for their linemates. I do however like seeing him used as a net front presence. He's not real good at it right now but I really feel he can be trained in to it. Last thing on Jordan, and the only thing I didn't like about him in pittsburgh, someone please remind him that he is like 220 lbs and built like a truck. *** hit someone please.
Defense- you guys are pretty spot on with your assesment. Gleason fills his role nicely, faulk continues to impress in all zones, Sangoalsinmynetty continues to be a standout in all the worst ways, corvo is a servicable 6th defenseman with sheltered minutes and o-zone starts.
Ward- I don't think he's been as bad as some make him out to be. You gotta have someone clearing the net front and he's not getting that assistance. It seems to me that people have pretty lofty expectation for him. And that is understandable but even elite goalies have slumps.
That's it. Like I said I come in peace and just wanted to offer some outside perspective. Still super sad to see Jordan leave the team but if he was going to go anywhere I'm glad it was to the Canes. I have adopted them as my second favouite team as geographically they are the closest. That and I really loved the whole hard work/lunch pail kind of group that this team was a few years ago. If they get back to that you've got a great team here.

That's a good assessment of Jordan Staal. We need to put him with talent that can take advantage of the fact that defenders will gravitate towards him.
Once Dalpe gets back, we can put him and Skinner back, and see where it takes us.

Canucks fan here. I took Semin in a later round and seeing Semin's SOG seems to be concerning. Is he not shooting the puck well? I was hoping to seeing some better production. I'm not going to drop him as right now I believe that he adds to my team really well.
Took a chance with Huberdeau over Zajac and man is that looking like a bad move. Probably going to hang on to Semin, but I sure as hell hope he starts producing. I'm getting killed. Parise a lone has 17 SOG..

Once E Staal and Semin get more chemistry, Semin's shots will go up. Semin is a shooter so I wouldn't worry too much about his shots just yet.

The organizational blind spot for defense strikes again. You guys can micro-analyze all you want, but at the end of the day, we have one top four d-man -- and he's 20 years old.
Tim Gleason is no better than Jay Harrison. Sanguinetti and Corvo have no business in the league. And Joni Pitkanen is maddeningly frustrating, having all the skills but seemingly no idea what to do with them. The combined hockey sense of the five of them barely approaches Faulk's.
Our guys get forechecked so easily, get pushed around like ragdolls, and even if they don't lose the puck, their first pass is so bad than we lose all momentum.
I've come to the conclusion that we're just not going back to the playoffs until the defense is overhauled, and it's just not my job to solve the problem.

Semin's SOG are low because he's consciously holding onto the puck to create chances for his linemates. How many times has he had the puck on the PP and walked it down, just to move it at the last second? His playmaking is much better than I thought, and in the long run that is more valuable to this team than a guy who takes 10 shots a game.
Faulk has been a defensive beast. I had a Leafs fan tell me this summer that Faulk is clear-cut below Jake Gardiner because they're both offensive dmen and Gardiner is more skilled. Hopefully the league starts to wake up to what this kid does in his own zone.
Our defense as a whole is getting physically overwhelmed and the forwards aren't much better. IMO, Jordan has actually looked pretty solid as the only forward who takes the body on a regular basis. Ruutu left a big hole, and even his mediocre offense is missed right now.
Why is Westgarth in the lineup? The guy played three minutes on a night where the captain was out there trying to fight people and the team spent the last 10 minutes looking shellshocked. 3 minutes is a waste of a roster spot, particularly in a game where the team is getting manhandled in front of a booing sellout crowd. Either use the guy or put Boychuk back in the lineup.
Speaking of player usage, it's hard to believe that Sanguinetti only played 13 minutes because I swear he and Pitkanen were out there for every important defensive zone draw. It's completely baffling to me why Sangs would EVER be out for a draw on his own side of the red line, let alone doing it repeatedly. If they're trying to showcase this guy for a trade, Muller is really going about it the wrong way.

Just wanted to thank you guys for all the questions you answered for me during the summer about going to a game in Raleigh. My son went last night and had an awesome time. He's been to a lot of hockey games in a lot of arenas and could not stop raving about how enthusiastic and NICE Canes fans were, even after the game. Kudos!
