Damn, missed that and it's right by my section (314). Wonder what the hell happened there as usually it seems like security is a lot easier on road fans then they are on our own. Probably had to literally take someone throwing a punch unprovoked.

The wife and I were in 313 and just saw a dude in a Stamkos jersey getting tossed...prior to that we had heard the section chanting "Stamkos sucks" so I have no clue if that was in response to something this guy was doing or if it provoked whatever got him thrown out.

Is there anyway to listen to John and Tripp's broadcast while at the games? Does it go out over a local radio station also?

Yes it's simulcast on 96.9 FM and 101.1 FM. If it sounds weird, don't worry, you just have to write to the Hurricanes and request a decoder chip for your radio. They do this to encourage people to tune into the TV broadcast and have to watch commercials, but if you request a secret decoder chip, they have to give you one.

I was in 327 and saw nothing.

BTW, those screens they have so you can watch John and Tripp during the game are awesome. I was able to watch every replay and every penalty.

Okay, here goes! My first "real" post here on the Canes boards.

First let me say I've enjoyed reading the posts on these forums. I love the smart and knowledgeable hockey-sense most everyone here exhibits. I've been here in Carolina for roughly 20 years or so and have had a slow conversion to the Canes and the process is almost complete.

So with the obligatory bs out of the way now... In a nutshell, what I've seen, or more pointedly, what I've not seen over the first two games is any sort of grit or toughness out of any of the Canes. Perfect example was Malone's hit on Staal. I'm sorry, I know Malone is a respected player and all, but when you crumple a team's Cap you need to be put on your behind yourself.

Somebody needs to standup, be counted and push back. The Canes are being bullied all over the ice and it feels like none of them care.

The Canes have too much talent this year to keep playing the way they are, but with this shortened schedule they had better get it together, and soon.

Besides, why are people complaining. In the last 3 drafts, we have taken:

Phillipe di Giusseppe (38th overall, thanks DaveG for the catch, no impact yet)
Ryan Murphy (a defensman)
Jeff Skinner (7th overall, could have had Cam Fowler)
Phillipe Paradise (an awful pick, but 26th, so no one who would be contributing right now, save for limited minutes from Dmitri Orlov).
Zach Boychuk (This one looks bad: we could have had Karlsson, Del Zotto, Schultz or Voynov).

That we have to go back 5 drafts to complain about JR not drafting defensemen in the first round is fairly indicative.

I might even be more generous to JR here:

2005 - Jack Johnson->Tim Gleason
2006 - Jamie McBain
2009 - Brian Dumoulin
2010 - Justin Faulk, Bobby Sanguinetti (for 2 picks)
2011 - Ryan Murphy

He's turned the last 6 drafts into a serviceable homegrown defensive group. What's missing is a) the kind of stud #1 defenseman that doesn't exactly pop out of the woodwork, and b) quality depth.

Problem "a" is not something you can address in the draft without either a lottery pick or blind luck. You're pretty much forced to go to trades and UFA to find guys like that, and we all know that we're at a disadvantage when it comes to acquiring players at market prices.

Problem "b" is where JR earns some rightful criticism. We really need another utility guy like Harrison who can take care of his end, and won't look completely out of place on either special teams unit. It doesn't have to be a stud, just someone who comes to play. Joe Corvo is not that guy; signing him was just ridiculous. Sanguinetti is not that guy; keeping him in the NHL is just ridiculous. We let Seidenberg go for nothing, we let Allen go for nothing, and we traded Dumoulin who looks like he will become that sort of player.

So really, in terms of drafting and development, I think JR has done a relatively decent job of acquiring pieces. His mistakes have been fairly narrow and in the case of the bottom-4 guys, relatively easy to fix as we go forward. The fact that we're missing that franchise-cornerstone stud can pretty much be chalked up to the odds going against us. But something has to be done about filling the gaping lack of a defensive defenseman, and that is squarely on JR.

On the backend of what wilmington caniac said about the lack of toughness after Staal got boarded, I was dumbfounded that Westgarth went out on the ice for maybe one shift afterwards. I thought that for sure he would go after Malone. Afterall, his one asset to this team is to add toughness and when it's not utilized, what is the point of having him in the lineup let alone roster.

I was in 313 as well. The storm squad came with some giveaways right before he got tossed. Wonder if he said something to them that they didn't like.

Bingo.

On top of that, I think even Malone himself was a little stunned that he didn't receive any push-back.
