Technical note: MAN does that video look amazing for 2009. Given it's from an era where highly-compressed 360p uploads were still normal... his video was retroactively bumped up to 60fps for meeting YouTube quality checks, and it's crisp and clean with no compression artifacts - seriously good work on CanucksHD's part, 8 years ago. Though I doubt most of his other clips are like that.

Yeah I thought once Dorsett got the frustration out of Chiasson the game turned around.

that one hit turns a game

stats guys like to have fun with if u hit it means u dont have the puck

well brodie did have the puck theb got destoryed and made his goon on his team take a penalty

pretty clear cut effectiveness

not realistic in game 7 of the scf but it will do

Wow, Miller - take a bow. I'd be tempted to go straight back to him for Canes. I think goaltending is going to be a treat this season. If Marky wants to play, he's going to need to step up!

That shift. Sedinery. Unreal goal. Loui probably the most thankful for that!

Some thoughts:

Miller was obviously solid. No goals allowed. I don't think Edler and Tanev had a good game. Eriksson, despite the gaffe, is a really good player. The Sedins, if kept fresh and healthy, are still first line players. Baertschi was really battling out there (why did he get so few minutes?). Sbisa had a solid game. Larsen is embracing his role as the point shooter on the PP. Gudbranson's wingspan and long stick makes him an effective defender. Speaking of long sticks, Sutter really is a good PKer. Dorsett had a good game. Hansen is Hansen. Bo was solid but he is a perennial slow starter and I'm afraid it will be the case this season.

Yes 2 pts, but why would you separate Horvat and Bart? Like would you separate Henrik and Sedin if uninjured.

I'll never forget that Rick Rypien breakaway goal near the end of the game. Even though it was basically a meaningless goal in terms of the outcome, I remember my friends and I jumping up and cheering that like it was a game winner. Just loved how he made something out of nothing, and sniped it like he was a scoring specialist. RIP

did they ever show the #freebo sign that was suppose to be directly behind willie during the game?

Hey, they did the thing. Cool. Good job Canucks. Its going to be a dull year watching them fight out 2-1 games, but we will take what we can get I guess.

I only got to watch the game from the last few minutes of the second on, so I missed almost two full periods....

What I liked seeing was the power play looked half decent, Miller looked fantastic, Johnny Hockey was contained pretty well, Baertschi looked like his confidence spilled over from last year and Sutter is a pretty hard working player every shift.

I sorta see the new NHL league like my beer league hockey, every team has a pretty average group of players and then there is this one guy who can step it up and score almost at will, there is also that one guy who you cringe when he is on the ice. The Canucks lack BOTH those players, I feel stronger all around but we don't have that game breaker.

a few stray thoughts:

that dorsett - horvat - burrows line was a good fourth line. good on the forecheck, decently strong on the boards, did its job nicely. of course, it is a complete waste of horvat but i'm thinking... one day that's what you want from gaunce, but he's not yet ready to carry dorsett, who had always and will always need to be carried, and burrows, who well i'm holding out hope that he just needs to play himself into midseason form but i may just be kidding myself. for now, if i were the coach i would go dorsett - sutter - burrows, which is an almost equally high end fourth line and can handle third line minutes (in that up and down fourth line role, there isn't a whole lot bo can do that sutter can't do; in a second line role there are things, like pass well, that bo can do that sutter can't).

that would allow willie to put together a third line of gaunce - jake - something that he could shelter with essentially fourth line minutes.

of course, that deviates from the 1-2-3-4 strategy, where lines 2-4 are equal and therefore equally get outplayed, but what do i know? i didn't graduate from gudger college.

first line looked like half-eaten dog food. how could they be so reportedly competitive at the world cup (i didn't watch it) and so bad against a garbage flames team with monahan at half speed? are they trying to get willie fired? JARVIS-LIDSTER 2017

but man oh man, what a boring game. this may be an all-time low point of the vancouver-calgary rivalry, even worse than the late 90s, post-fleury and post-bure. i literally slept through the third period, waking up briefly when i heard the goal, then after watching the highlight almost immediately falling asleep again until the shootout.

but here's a flashback to a simpler, happier, most exciting time. the last time the canucks faced off against a young tkachuk, beating the jets in back-to-back smythe semi-finals. both series are on youtube and are awesome: the canucks coming back from 3-1 in '92 and bure ending tabaracci's seemingly-promising career, phil housley hearing footsteps and coughing up the puck like he was sopel, selanne in '93 getting eaten alive by our big d (dana murzyn's one shining moment), and my absolute favourite moment of those series, @14:30 of the video below:

My big concern, the defense, didn't look that bad. Wish they could move the puck a bit better at the bottom end though. Hutton looks ready to take another step.

Miller the best Canuck by a mile.

Canucks lines other than the Sedins were trash.

Dorsett played a good high-energy 4th line game. He can't do much with the puck though, and shouldn't play with Horvat.

The Good

Millsy - unreal game looks like a gem
Hutty - looks 1st pair bound
Tanman - unnoticeably doing all the little things right
Sbisa - for a 3rd pairing guy made the smart moves and wasnt in anyway a liability
Dorset - hard to admit it but played a better game then any of his last year

The Bad

Sedins - one good shift doesnt erase how slow and noneffective they were all game
Eriksson - wanting to cheer for him but very poor start
Granlund - preseason superstar - regular season dud

Meh

The rest

Hutty - looks 1st pair bound

i'd love to see, when hutton is ready for added responsibility and if/when larsen proves himself to not be a liability at ES:

hutton - tanev
edler - larsen
sbisa/tryamkin - gudbranson

tanev to help hutton freelance and develop his offensive game by providing the peace of mind of a high level defensive partner

larson to hopefully be a good ES puck mover and kind of a poor man's ehrhoff, letting edler play within himself, regain his confidence, and slide solidly back into the young edler role which he was so good at

large gentlemen on the third pair

I remember that game, wow so long ago, that vid seriously gives me nostalgia feels. 2008-2012 and maybe 2013 was such a good time for the canucks. exciting. since then i havent really been a fanatic about the nucks as i was back then. I guess i was still into them in 2013-14 but that season was terrible and drove me away from the canucks.

the crowd was a lot louder back then despite the bad season beforehand
