T. Linden was someone who always punched above his regular season weight in the playoffs. 80 points in 79 games in his first 8-year stint in Vancouver, and nice leadership, physicality and two-way presence as well, and always showed up in elimination games.

S. Koivu is another one who was a gamer in the playoffs.

Linden was the real deal in the run to the finals that is for sure.

Lundqvist is a good pick for best playoff goalie to never win a Cup. Joseph is also good.

I used to call it the CuJo Test to see how many wins and losses a player got by how many GA were allowed. Here are their playoff records, with Ed Belfour tossed in to compare.

While it obviously helps to be on the low end of the GA count, Lundqvist and Joseph typically weren't winning if they let in a 3rd goal - and even the 2nd might cost them the game.

This isn't an individual performances list. He was probably the 3rd (2nd at best) most important Capital in that run. Which isn't a negative. They had three excellent performers (Kuznetsov, Holtby).

Looks like you strongly overrate both guys, especially Holtby

If anything Lafleur at 15 is too high as outside of his peak/prime on that dynasty his playoff resume is very Marcel Dionne like, except with way better teams.

Over the course of his career he is only 12th in playoff scoring.

Sure there are some Oilers there and he was older in the 80s but still for 15th all time one would expect a more dominating resume and more consistency right?

daniel briere deserves a mention. from 2006 to 2012 he had 106 points in 102 playoff games—it's a cherrypicked sample but he's actually the top playoff scorer in the league over that span. gotta be one of the few people to have a higher P/G in the playoffs than the regular season (.91 in the regular season, 1.04 in the playoffs). top scorer in 2010 with 30 points and oddly tied for the top goal scorer in 2012 (with only 8 goals, but still).

That makes him a great playoff performer - especially in contrast to his competition at the time (thinking the Thorntons of the world there), but I don't think it'd put him on my list. Extra points in general though just for finding that extra gear.

More CuJo Tests

This was done by filtering 55+ minute games, because I wanted a better idea of 2-GA games. I eyeballed them before, but because I was doing more goalies, I wanted a minutes filter to limit the chances that I'd let a 2-GA game from a 1 period performance into the sample.

As a result blowout losses where you get pulled don't make it into the sample. Ed Belfour is really 0-4 in 6-GA games, but this filter means giving up 6 goals in 27 minutes and getting himself pulled helps him out a little in this data set. So I added a column for games 54 mins and under. The variable times are also a variable I didn't want (where does a 40 minute 4-GA game go? Do you use GAA?), so a 5-GA game after 2 periods will go there; however, this column is not a pure blowout column, as it will include injuries and injury or equipment replacement games as well as blowouts, so take it with a grain of salt.

Unless it's Mike Vernon. He was terrible in each and every one of those games and his GAA is 4.50 in his best <54 performance. If he didn't play 55+ minutes, he was atrocious.

I encourage people to check on this because I am a little out of it.

Vasilevskiy is undefeated in 1-GA games. So were Dryden and Cheevers, while Grant Fuhr was a winner in 1-GA AND 2-GA games on the dynasty Oilers (the 2-GA loss was in 1991) though he would have a losing record in 2-GA games afterwards from his time in St. Louis.

Good thing Curtis Joseph has a high shutout rate because he's the only guy on this list who is under 80% in 1-GA games. Roy was slightly under 80% in in Montreal, but then went 90% the rest of the way with Colorado.

Roy seems to have had more timely goal support in 2-GA and 3-GA games then Hasek or Brodeur, even if you ignore the Montreal half of his career due to era. Plante seems to have a similar advantage over Sawchuk and Hall.

Quick is 4-12 since the 2014 Finals, with an 0-3 record in 2-GA games. As bad as his luck was against the much luckier Fleury, he's still slightly better off than King Henrik in 2-GA games, where Lundqvist is the only one with a losing record on this list.

6-GA seems to be death in any era, but Cheevers managed to scrape out a 7-6 win over the 77 Kings.

The Flyers didn't learn to score until after Parent's back-to-back Smythes, so he didn't get a ton of help in high GA games, especially not next to the dynasty goalies who followed him.

Bernie Parent, Ed Belfour and CuJo all had tough times in 3-GA games - but the only guy here who outdoes Henrik Lundqvist's 30% win percentage is Martin Brodeur (28%) and the often low-voltage Devils offense.
