Has Kyle Turris proven himself to be a #1C?

Damn I still can't believe we skinned Arizona for this guy. He's been steadily improving every year and who knows, maybe he'll even be better next year.

And MacArthur too. I still remember when Leaf fans would say that he's gonna stop caring and play like ****..... 2 years ago now? Funny they don't say that anymore.

The thread where that trade was announced was hilarious

Epic meltdown "We traded away HF's best prospect for a guy who is giving the team who drafted him a real hard time!"

A few of us were very, very happy however. I was so, so pumped when that trade happened

If Pageau can somehow transform into 20-20 players, then we will have a 1a, 1b and a 1c centre on our hands.

40 points with great all-around play and physical edge is 2b. Essentially an average second line C.

If Lazar becomes 25-25 then we got 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b as our top 4 C's which is quite brilliant.

How much better does Turris need to be to be a #1C? Guys 19th in center scoring and plays a good to great 200ft game. He's about as good a center as you'll get without getting into superstar territory. Your dreaming or delusional if you expect Ottawa to magically find a Crosby or Toews for an upgrade. He didn't have a great series against Montreal but both his linemates were injured, so you can't hold that against him too much. Down the stretch Turris, Stone and MacArthur/Michalek were one of the best lines in the NHL.

Turris doesn't have enough creativity to be a bonafide number 1 C..... yet, IMO. When I mean creativity I mean he breaks a game wide open with an offensive play that shocks everyone.

He does do that once in a while like his brilliant shorthanded goal vs Anaheim or the Stone set up in OT but it needs to be more consistent not twice in a year.

In the PP he is very enigmatic, a number 1 C would control it or be a lethal option. I consider MacArthur is bigger PP threat and that's saying something. All he does is he cycles to the nearest person and his shot is very sub par and ineffective most of the time.

When Zibanejad winds up, I get excited though, that's what I wanna see from Turris.

Well, We traded our 2nd rounder and Runblad for Turris.

Coyotes went on and traded that 2nd rounder for Antoine Vermette.

Coyotes traded Vermette for Klas Dahlbeck and Chicago's 1rst rounder

It wasn't that bad considering they had Vermette for a couple years from the 2nd and now they got some future for him. I'll take Turris before that no questions but people often think about Runblad only and forget about the 2nd part of the deal.

Just had to throw it in here that it's been cool to watch Turris evolve from being the beneficiary of Spezza's dangles to dangling himself this year.

1b or 2A for me, his playoffs this year were really disappointing for me. I think it just shows how integral Mark Stone is to his game and who the real star on that line is.

I just dont think physically he will ever be dominant enough, he has the skill hockey sense etc but he doesnt have that blinding speed or imposing frame/physicality.

If they could work out a deal to trade him for RNH I would be all over it.

Without a doubt, I love Turris and think he can be a very good 1b or spectacular elite number 2 but RNH has stardom potential. I'd add huge plus with Turris.

Yeah, except for he misses the net 99% of the time. :shakehead

The impression that he's not a true #1 might come from the fact that he's a jack of all trades/ master of none kinda guy. He's got a great shot but he's not a sniper. He has good vision and good hands but he's not a true playmaker. Doesn't shy away from contact but he's not a Powerforward. He's a great 2 way player but I don't think many would call him a defense specialist.

I think that's why some people have a hard time seeing him as a #1. Great all around but not elite in anything.

Despite all that, he gets the job done and that's why I think he is a true Top line center. Not a superstar but in today's NHL you don't need to be one to be first line material.

This is spot on. Turris is a really, really good player, but there's not one thing about him that screams "dominant".

Ottawa does have the good fortune of possessing some quantity of very capable centres which can enable them to succeed in a less traditional style. The Devils and Bruins won cups with depth at centre in lieu of a bona fide elite #1. Granted, they had other significant players to carry the load, but you can still be competitive without the stereotypical franchise #1 centre.

Turris is no doubt a #1c, he's just in the bottom half of them.

Meh, a second round pick is worth a second round pick, it doesn't matter if Arizona got good value out of it later on, it's still one of the more lopsided deals of the last few years.

Can't deceide if he's a 1B or a 2A. He's definitely in that 25-35 range as far as centers are concerned. If he takes another step next year he'll be firmly in 1B territory. I don't see him turning into a bonafide #1 guy, but he's already surpassed my expectations. Great player, great guy, great contract, glad we have him locked up.

Turris is a #1 centre & he has proven it two yrs in a row. He had 58 pts last yr & followed that up with 64 pts this yr, what more do people want from this guy? He's not Spezza, he's not gonna put up 90 plus pts especially these days when scoring seems to be going down but he plays a much better defensive game than Spezza which makes him a better all around player than Spezza. He has also played against the opposition team's best players & done well against them head to head.

I also don't get this 1a or 1b, it's all ********, he plays a 1st line centre role, he has excelled in that role this past yr & I expect as Stone gets better so will Turris. In fact, next yr I'd put Hoffman with them to see what those three can accomplish together. He reminds me of Jonathan Toews the way he plays defensively & transitions so quickly to offence, Toews is another guy who doesn't get enough respect mostly because of Crosby getting all the hype & yet all Toews does is win.

There must be 20-30 better centres in the nhl.

Not good enough to be a first line C on a team that expects to go all the way.

Unless the team around him is absolutely flawless, which it is not and we may not be able to expect it to be.

Zibanejad should take some sort of leap going forward. A big one would make a big difference. Turris could also continue to improve to a certain degree.

All I can say if people regarded Spezza as a true number 1 center then Turris is a slight notch down. While he may not be as offensively skilled as Spezza his 2-way game makes up for it.

I have no problem with Turris being our number 1C, especially now with Zibby improving and being capable of the 2C duty.

With that said there is probably 10-15 centers who I hold in a category above Turris's talent level, but our depth at C is looking good.

20, yeah. Probably 20.

30... I'm not so sure.

Definitely better than Turris:
Getzlaf, Bergeron, E. Stall, Toews, Duchesne, O'Reilly, Johansen, Seguin, Datsyuk, Kopitar, Carter, Tavares, Giroux, Crosby, Malkin, Pavelski, Couture, Stankos, Johnson, Sedin, Backstrom

Guys worth having a discussion about:
Kesler, Spezza, RNH, Koivu, Plekanec, Stepan, Brassard, Thornton, Backes, Stastny

... am I missing anyone?

By my count, I've got exactly 21 guys who are DEFINITELY better than Turris, but... after that, it gets murky. I've got 10 more guys who are in "maybe/maybe not" territory.

So unless we can find a few more guys to add to the "maybe" list, I'd say he's almost assuredly a top-30 center in the league, or at worst (assuming you think ALL of the guys I have as "maybes" are ahead of him) he's the 31st guy.

The only nit I'd pick is Thornton - I'd keep him in the "debatable" column... practically has had a HHOF career, but I don't know if a 36 year old Thornton isn't in decline at this point and Turris has the edge at the moment.

Otherwise, it's roughly the same. Turris still slides into that 21-31 overall range of centers in the league.

I think you missed Krejci, and Little. Kreci goes in the definately list imo, while Little probably a strong debatably candidate.

Personal preferences, I suppose. I forgot about Krejci, but I'd put him in the "maybe" category. I think Turris and Krejci match up pretty well in a comparison, actually.

Little was a conscious omission. He's not there, IMO. He's the next tier down.
