all comes down to floor now.
Still probably Russia's to lose because they are better at floor; USA will still need Suni to do her big girl floor routine if they want to win.

They say Biles has a "medical" issue so that could be something in between a physical injury and the mental health thing. She seemed to lose perception of where she was in the air during her vault, so there could be something medically wrong there causing that but not necessarily an "injury"

Watching Russian broadcast is a bit embarrassing, American gymnast falls down, Russian female broadcaster says “oh, thank you..I’m sorry”

Chiles falls.
It's over. GG Russia.

As an american I'm sad, but as a fan of the sport I'm very happy for Melnikova. Doing what Khorkina and Mustafina couldn't. Melnikova isn't the best, but just someone you want good things to happen to

the aftermath of this for USAG will be an absolute shit show to watch unfold.
Biles GOAT status is cancelled if it turns out she didn't suffer a real injury

this is the gymnastics equivalent of Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson.
not taking anything away from Russia cause they are good, but all we've heard for the last 4-years is "America could send their C-squad and win the gold easily" "they'll win by 9 points" and "Simone is the GOAT she is only competing with herself"

GB wins Bronze!
Vindicated.
good for them. they got a lot of shit for their team selection because they opted to take 4 AA instead of grandma bar specialist Downie and people insisted she was blackballed from the team.

No, it's called they wanted a team medal and they achieved it

if Biles still competes in the AA and Events to stat pad medals, it won't really matter.

her legacy is tarnished. Khorkina would have rather died than quit on her team on the biggest stage. Things can happen on any give day it's ok to not win gold every time, but to quit on your team because you're not just feeling it today is WOAT. Again, IF she's not really injured. If she's hurt, I retract.

Can we all calm down & see what really is going on with Simone? She is at the age where the body begins to break down and she has had issues in several events of late. I realize she as admitted to having issues with pressure of late but I just can't imagine she'd up and quit in the middle of an event. Its not in her DNA.

If I'm wrong I'll be the 1st to admit it, but until we hear otherwise she gets the benefit of the doubt.

And even if it is the minorest of injuries, last thing I want to see is another Kerri Strug incident.
Strug had the heart of a champion. She would do it again in a heartbeat.

Some people embrace competitive adversity; others crumble.
Biles crumbled today. You can't be putting a rein-stone goat on your leo and tell anybody who will listen nobody is on your level and you're only competing with yourself only to bail when the going gets tough.

EDIT:
Simone LITERALLY just told reports she pulled out because "it's mental." Absolute quitter. I feel bad for Suni Lee. Works her whole life to get here, her father is paralyzed a year ago, she wants to make good and win him a gold, but hey sorry the GOAT isn't feeling it today so tough luck and bails on the team.

Suni Lee deserves credit for fighting her heart out today. Chiles, even though she fell, deserves a lot of credit today for coming off the bench and competing when her team needed her no questions asked. Those girls had courage today.

I'm searching the interwebs and have yet to see where she admitted she quit because of mental issues. If she knew she was not at 100% and would hurt the team by continuing to compete then she did the right thing. She knows her body better than we do.

that's a very nice way of saying she quit on her team.
looking forward to the post olympics press tour when she cries on Ellen like Ronda Rousey about how tough it is that she put a diamond GOAT on her gear

This sin't Naomi Osaka where it's an individual event where I'm 100% fine with the athlete doing what's best for them.
Once again, big credit to Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles. they went above and beyond today and showed tremendous fight and courage when the team needed them most.

I can't help thinking this is probably entirely the media's fault. The GOAT thing confuses me because she never seemed to have an ego before, but maybe all that stuff is just trying to buy into her own hype and be more marketable because I imagine the casual American sports audience laps that shit up.
Simone was extremely humble from 2013-2016.
Once she came back in 2018, the persona changed and it went into overdrive.

Around that time is when she started casually saying stuff like "I have no competition and I'm only competing against myself" and including GOATS on her leos etc

There's been speculation here and there the last week Biles is pregnant. Thats a pretty bold prediction, I cannot see any way a woman, even if she was 6-8 weeks pregnant would participate in something like gymnastics. Its just beyond insane. I am guessing she has been hurt for awhile based on her last few months performances and has played through it and that vault landing or maybe something she did 2 days ago made it impossible to continue.

One thing is for sure though. I think Tom Forster will be fired and I don't think anything he could have done in the last month would have made any difference.

Oh dear......this is not good. Well, we still need to know more. I still think at the end of the day it was better for her to remove herself rather than cost the team any medal at all by completely messing up.

Kerri Strug hurt ankle? sticks the landing and wills a gold medal for her team like a legend.
Simone Biles hurt ego? quits on her team

if Simone actually competes in AA + Events after abandoning her team.... wew. she could win 5 individual golds, but it won't matter. Quitters cannot be GOATS. Imagine Jordan quitting on the Bulls in Game 7 of the Finals.
I'll regain some respect for her and be more sympathetic if she pulls out of the remainder cause at least it's consistent.

nothing really much more to say, but once again, big props to Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles today. They were only supposed to do 2/4 events and they came in at the last minute and fought like hell when the team needed them most. Team captain and team leader quit on them, and they fought until the end. Suni Lee has a really f***ed up ankle but she went all out for her team.
A lot of courage and heart displayed by them. The real queens but they won't get the proper acknowledgment.
