Great thread! I especially love the photos of Morenz and Richard.

Photos of young Maurice Richard are amazing. This one is great, too:

Pinterest suggests that Richard is embracing Elmer Lach (recently deceased) here after a game-winning goal, evidently at the Forum, against Boston. (Anyone know the date?)

Leapin' Louie hipchecks André Pronovost in 1957. Worth noting is that Fontinato recorded the highest pre-expansion +/- rating in one season (+55 in 1961/62)

^^^^^ Great photos!

I'd seen the last one before and the Eddie Shore autograph signing one in a couple of books. The others never before. LOVED the broken jaw, would like to have framed the Richard looking into the cup photo and appreciate greatly the Believeau-Hull moment.

Now, I'll zip over to google images and see if I can dig up a new-to-me Eddie Shore pic.

EDIT: I found one! Er, it shows clearly he was pretty muscular (pre-weightlifting gym era).

Searching a small search through DPLA and ran across this photo from University of Wisconsin Digital Collections from 1929:
"Hockey players Donald Meiklejohn (L) and Gilbert Krueger (R) on ice rink on the current Library Mall at the University of Wisconsin--Madison."

:thumbu: I had an old sports cage very much like those at home, handed down from older brothers. Story went that it was a corkball catcher's mask. I'd use it occasionally while in goal playing street hockey. Probably spared my parents the expense of a pair or two of wire-frame glasses - but only for a few extra weekends.

Al Arbour.
What's he thinking?
Maybe: "Will I ever be great? Am I a future HHOFer?"
Yes, Al, you will be. Just not as a player.

arbour3.jpg

To be fair, his playing career was a bit noteworthy: He won the Stanley Cup
in Chicago and Toronto and captained the expansion St. Louis Blues
to 3 straight Stanley Cup Finals as a def. dman whom Scotty Bowman trusted.

.... again, outstanding!.... keep em' comin.
Why don't you join in? It's easy. Just go to Google, type in search words then click Images. Sometimes you strike gold, sometimes you don't. Surfing is fun!

Let me give you an example I'll do here now. Killion. Hmm,... let's check out 'kill', 'lion' 'hockey' 'NHL' in various combinations.

Okay, using kill, lion and NHL I got a bunch of wild lion pictures and one of Eugene Melnyk in an NHL jersey talking about how the Senators would only play in a downtown arena of his making (one of the stories on the page is about lion hunting). No go on great pics here.

Okay, using kill, hockey, NHL, I get an interesting photo of Stan Jonathan with a quote from coach Don Cherry who called him "the definitive Bruin", a hard-working, hard-hitting role player and enforcer nicknamed "Bulldog" who in 2012 accidentally killed someone on a deer hunting trip. The photo is from 1978.

Charlie Conacher with binoculars? In a Wings uniform? :amazed: That just looks wrong. The longtime Leaf great apparently played one season in Detroit I hadn't realized, then went to New York where he finished his HHOF career with a couple of seasons on the now-defunct Americans.

1947 - Emile "The Cat" Francis

Wow. Checkout the foam Francis taped to his Blocker, similar to Denis Brodeurs though nowhere near as "form fitting". Indeed, Emile's entire rig extremely rudimentary, held together by tape. No protection really on the upper portion of his skates, the pads barely covering the knee's with the top straps totally loose, the pocket of his catching glove providing little in way of "trap", hard shot would just ricochet right out of it & very likely break a finger or two.
