C

Vaclav Varada – struggled in faster, cleaner NHL
Scott Mellamby – great leader, who’s had ave. season, should retire
Jiri Fischer–having good season until almost fatal heart condition, may try comeback
Jordin Tootoo – when given the chance has played well, still not trusted due to PIM
Thomas Pock – played well when called up, 2pts in 7 games but playing well defensively

F
Eddie Belfour – back problems and poor def. = bad season
Turner Stevenson – injuries have hurt his season
Steve Gainey – was having great AHL yr but did not produce in NHL when called up

Jan Hrdina
Had an OK season for the struggling Blue Jackets, but was not able to improve the team.
Grade: C

Jordan Leopold
His production was not up to his standards and offensive abilities, but he established himself as a top-pairing dman in Calgary logging big minutes.
Grade: B

Eric Belanger
Got more opportunities than expected due to injuries of the Kings top offensive players and did well, posting career highs in goals and points.
Grade: B

Jim Vandermeer
Posted career highs in goals, assists, points, PIM and shots on goal. Averaged nearly 22 minutes per game seeing the ice in all situations.
Grade: A

Mathieu Dandenault
Established himself as a top 4 defenseman in Montreal, providing a steady presence on the blueline. Also had a career-high 15 assists.
Grade: B

Kristian Huselius
The trade to Calgary kick-started his season, after scoring only 8 points in 24 games for Florida, he scored 39 in only 53 games for Calgary. Consistency is still a problem for him, however he managed to post career-highs in assists, points, PIM and game winning goals.
Grade: B

Brad Lukowich
The reliable defensive defensman anchored the the Islanders blueline before he was traded to New Jersey where he figures to be a depth defenseman only.
Grade: C

Niclas Wallin
Missed a lot of games because of injuries, but still managed to score a career-high 4 goals.
Grade: D

Brian Savage
Was not able to log a lot of ice time and is dead last on the Flyers with a +/- of -17.
Grade: F

Chad Kilger
The Leafs struggled throughout the season but Kilger was one of the few bright spots. The defensive forward scored a career-high 17 goals including 2 game winners.
Grade: B

Sean Avery
Bigmouth forward posted career-highs in all offensive categories, however his off-ice behaviour got him into troubles more than once.
Grade: C

Jason Chimera
Chimera enjoyed a true career year on the struggling Blue Jackets. Of his 17 goals 5 proved to be game winners.
Grade: A

Ramzi Abid
Abid served as call-up for Atlanta, seeing the ice in only 6 NHL games this season.
Grade: E

Ben Clymer
The versatile Clymer proved again his streakiness, but was able to score a career high 15 goals.
Grade: B

Matt Stajan
Sparingly used until the Leafs season was nearly over he proved his coach wrong late when he received more ice time and was able to score career-highs in goals and points.
Grade: B

Tommy Albelin
Hockey grandpa was a reliable depth player for the Devils.
Grade: C

Tomi Pettinen
Pettinen saw NHL ice in only 18 games this season, not being able to crack a below average Islanders blueline.
Grade: E

George Parros
Established himself as a decent NHL enforcer in his rookie season, also scored some points early in the season, but struggled to do so after the first few games.
Grade: C

Steve Goertzen
Surprisingly made the team out of camp, providing energy and two-way play, but was not able to mark a single point in the NHL.
Grade: C

Jeff Giuliano
Was the first call-up for the Kings and played 48 games scoring 7 points on the fourth line.
Grade: C

Cam Janssen
Hard-hitting energy player was a pleasant surprise for the Devils, however was not able to score a single point in 46 games in the NHL.
Grade: B

Craig Anderson
Started the season real slow, was placed on waivers by 3 teams (Chicago - St. Louis - Boston) only to end up again in Chicago. Found his confidence halfway through the season and played in a career-high 28 games, posting better stats than Chicago's starting netminder Nikolai Khabibulin.
Grade: B

Mario Lemieux B
Mario retired after 26 games with 22 points.

Derek Armstrong A
Career year in points and assist.

Michael Nylander A
Nyllet as people call him in Sweden found Jagr as a right winger and also set personal
record in points, assist and penalty minutes. Can Nylander break 100 points next season?

Stephane Yelle D
Yelle isnt getting any younger. The 32years old vet had a pretty bad year with just 18 points.

Jody Shelley C
The enforcer also proves that he can plays. Set record in points, assit and tied his record
in goal. Only 155 minutes though.

Daniel Sedin A
New record in points, assist, goals. Improves his record by amazing 18 points.

Todd Harvey D
The former topp10 pick has had a pretty bad year with Edmonton. Just 7 points and -6 is not
good enough.

Jeff Cowan C
Just one goal away from his record. Just 9 points and -8.

Matt Johnson F
Hasnt played a single minute yet this season.

Andre Roy D
In his first season with Pittsburgh he only manage to get 3 points. Only -4 impress however in
a team that have been bad all season long.

Valeri Bure F
Hasnt played a game yet this season.

Niklas Sundstrom C
Hasnt played much this season. Only 15 points and he has been a healthy scratch for the
last couple of weeks.

Tie Domi D
Tie is getting older and older. The vet only had 16 points which is his worst season since
99/00. First time ever he has less then 100 minutes

Jonathan Aitken E
Have been playing for Hamilton in the AHL the entire season. Hasnt been in the big league
since 03/04, will he ever be back?

Jamie Pushor C
The vet started the season in the minors and played over 70 games for Syracuse before
Columbus called him up for the playoff hunt. 2 points in as many games in the big
league.

Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre F
Have been playing in Europe for the last two seasons. Will probably not be back in
North America.

Ivan Majesky C
Has 9 points for Capitals, just three point shy from his record with Atlanta. Is just -4
in a team that has been bad the entire season.

Niclas Havelid B
Another impressive season by Niclas. Over 30 points for the 2nd time in his career.
Career high in assist and impressive +9.

Shane Hnidy D
Shane hasnt scored a goal in the NHL since 01/02, which means four seasons in a row
without a goal. He is +1 however.

Rory Fitzpatrick C
Tied career high in goals. Could have been a B if he hadnt had -18.

Steve Montador C
One goal which is tied for his record. +5

Vladimir Malakhov D
Sign a big contract before the season but retired from the game just 29 games into the
season. Had 9 points in those games.

Curtis Joseph B
Solid season by CuJo. One of few players that could be satiesfied with their season in
Phoenix.

Jackets NHL Performance Review 2005-06

Jackets NHL/Minors Performance Review 2005-06

Henrik Sedin - A
An outstanding year for the 25-year-old twin. 57 helpers and 75 points in a full 82-game sched, second on the team only to Markus Naslund's 79 points; was +11 to Naslund's -19. Career bests in virtually every category.

Mike Modano - A
35-year-old returned to form after a lackluster 2003-04 with point-per-game scoring, a plus 23 and 4 game winners.

Brendan Shanahan - A
Now 37, Shanahan also rediscovered his offensive potential, on pace for 41/41/82, 99 pim and a +29.

Slava Kozlov - A
On pace for over 25 goals, 70 points, and a +14 on a team with defensive issues. Within a point or two of career high points production.

Joni Pitkanen - A
Torn abdominal muscle stole 21 games, but Pitkanen still impressed with 45 points and a +22 - the 4th-higest scorer and top defenceman on the team - despite appearing in only 57 games for Philly. Among the top point-per-game defencemen in the league.

Phillippe Boucher - A
FInally came into his own with career bests in goals (16), assists (26) and points (42) - along with PP and GWG, natch - and nearly equalling a career best with +27. Great time for a career year - his contract is up, and there are few quality defencemen on the HFNHL FA market. The bidding should be fierce!

Brian Pothier - A
Did he benefit from playing with the top team in teh EasT? Absolutely. But that can't take away from his career highs in every category - games, goals, assists, points, +/-, penalty minutes, PPG and shots.

Steve Bernier - A
Third time's the charm - stuck on his third call-up of the season with the Sharks after strong performances for Cleveland of the AHL, and proved his worth at the NHL-level with 14 goals and 27 points in only 38 games as a rookie. 33 penalty minutes, 75 shots and a +6 show that Bernier was getting involved in every game, and is improving on his skating and conditioning question-marks.

Dustin Penner - A
Not quite the impact Bernier has had at the NHL-level, but respectable with 7 points in 19 appearances for the Ducks. Earns an A for having the highest points-per-game in the AHL with 84 points in only 57 games!

Ryan Potulny - A
Hobey Baker nominee led NCAA Division I in scoring as a Junior before turning pro last month. The 21-year-old isn't looking out of place on the Flyers so far, with an assist and a +1 in two games.

Jonas Nordquist - A
Led the SEL in scoring for much of the season before finishing 6th with 41 points in 46 games. Will get a serious look-see with chicago in September.

Nathan Davis - A
Monster freshman season, leading Miami (Ohio) in scoring with 20 goals and 40 points in 37 games.

Martin Brodeur - B
Took a long time to adjust to the new rules (and, perhaps, bouncing back from the lost season) before returning to form. That his numbers are top-10 in gaa and save% after such a poor start shows how well he's been playing since the break.

Keith Carney - B
Solid citizen played well for Anaheim, but slipped both offensively and defensively when moved to Vancouver at the deadline. Perhaps if he had a goalie to play in front of...

Mattias Norstrom - B
Career offensive numbers offset by a slight minus on the season. LA's struggles not his fault, but he has to take his lumps along with the rest.

Mark Bell - B
Career highs in goals (25), points (48), playoff goals (11) and shots (223), but a terrible +/-, and needs to work both on his consistency and his leadership.

Mike York - B
Solid but not overwhelming offence, and seemed to be on the ice for an inordinate number of goals against. Good, but should be better.

Steve Begin - B
Career bests in games, offensive stats, plus/minus and pim. Still a fourth-line agitator, but one showing third-line potential.

Filip Novak - B
Unspectacular in his audition with Ottawa, but not awful, and was among the AHL's leading scorer among defencemen, with 52 points in 63 games for Binghampton.

Jeremy Colliton - B
Most valuable contributions were not on the scoresheet; Colliton earned spot duty with the Isles as a checker, and saw that time increase towards the end of the season. Should be a good third-liner.

Mike Smith - B
4th in gaa (2.50) and 7th in save percentage (.917) among AHL goalies. Earned a callup to Dallas as a backup when Turco went down injured.

Martin Houle - B
6th in gaa (2.54) and 9th in save percentage (.914) among AHL goalies - 2nd among rookies in both categories.

James Neal - B
Had a decent season but really came alive in the playoffs, leading Plymouth to a first-round victory over Windsor before falling in 6 to Guelph. Among the league leaders in playoff goals and points after two rounds.

Geoff Sanderson - C
25 goals (and 46 points) offset by a dreadful -15. Benefits from the more open game, but costs his team as well.

Chris Gratton - C
Decent production but not approaching his potential. Improved defensively, though, including scoring his first career short-handed goal.

Mike Leclerc - D
Injuries still Leclerc's Achilles heel, with a left knee strain and a broken wrist costing him 31 games. Scored 26 points in 49 games, but points-per-game dropped following his trade to Calgary - possibly due to complications from his injuries.

Bob Boughner - D
Boogeyman quitely did his thing in Colorado, but was often a scratch.

Jeremy Roenick - D
The other mouth in LA (aside from Avery) had to talk about things like retirement, after injuries hampered most of his season.

Mike Leighton - D
Traded to Buffalo, he didn't get a chance to reestablish himself at the NHL level after playing well in the 03-04 season for Chicago. Based on his indifferent play with Rochester, he may not get another chance.

Kirk Maltby - F
Well off the pace both offensively and in his own zone. Had better hope for a rejuvenation next season, or he may find himself riding the buses with Grand Rapids.

Adrian Aucoin - F
A season devasted by injury, defensive miscues and poor conditioning after the lost season, the lockout might as well have continued for all the impact Adrian made this year. -13 in only 33 games played? Ugh.

HFNHL Red Wings

Guest
Using a slightly different format - based on this years production and next years projected HFNHL Red Wing lines.

1st line Rolston (A) - Straka (A) - Knuble (A-)
- Rolstons career year (33% higher production than his previous career high) earned him a large contract and will be the teams go to guy next season
- Straka saw his point production jump after being reunited with Jagr. He will similarly be looked at to distribute the puck to Rolston and Knuble next year.
- Knuble had a career year himself (65pts) with a good balance of goals and assists and therefore should compliment his linemates.

2nd line Jokinen (B-) - Boyes (A) - Parrish (C+) aka the PB&J line
- Jokinen surprised many with his offensive flair and worked his way up from the 4th to the top line by the 30 game mark. While he seemed to fade a bit in the final stretch of the season he has shown a great scoring touch and will look to improve further. The 2nd line is not guaranteed yet as line chemistry will ultimately determine if Jokinen or Lehtinen starts on the 2nd line.
- Boyes did everything that could be asked. Despite playing the first half of the year on the 3rd and 4th lines he put up more than a point per game in the 2nd half and only failed to get on the scoresheet 4 times. In addition he finished with the teams best +/-. He is a lock for the 2nd line C position and hopefully will be ready to take the top line spot in the following year when Straka becomes a UFA.
- Parrish, despite playing for a horrible Islanders team and joining a LA team in the midst on an epic collapse he put up his 2nd best offensive numbers and showed great leadership while with the Isles. Unfortunately his very poor +/- numbers will hurt him. His character and leadership will be needed on this yound 2nd line.

3rd line Lehtinen (B) - Draper (D) - Hunter (C)
- Lehtinen matched his career high with 51pts and as always showed a strong commitment to two way play. As previously noted he will battle with Jokinen for the 2nd line spot.
- Draper found it a challenge to adapt to the new NHL this season. Although he has the foot speed and his ratings were not horrible he did see his point production drop significantly and was among the lowest +/- players in Detroit this year.
- Hunter suffered from what the team hopes is nothing more than a sophomore jinx. His significant point production drop was also partly attributable to a reduction in ice time with the addition of Satan in the offseason. On the upside his +/- remained respectable given the team he plays for.

4th line Kunitz (C-) - Stumpel (C+) - Clark (C+)
- Kunitz - if anyone has seen him play please help me to understand what's going on with him in Anaheim - put up respectable numbers but was twice claimed on waivers during the season, was used on many different lines but mainly the 4th, and seemed to be in the doghouse regularly.
- Stumpel, a natural playmaking centre, was moved to RW, a position he has never played, and his production suffered accordingly in the 1st half. He found his game in the second half and salvaged the year with a respectable 52pts. After 5 seasons in Detroit, most of them as the top line C, Stumpel is finding himself on the outside looking in as others pass him on the depth chart. While he is currently listed as the 4th line C the team will do it's best in the offseason to find a new home for Stumpel where he can get the ice time he deserves.
- Clark was given the opportunity to ride shotgun for Ovechkin and as a result had a career high 39pts with 110PIM

The reserves
- Gary Roberts (C) - Despite injuries slowing Roberts he still put up a respectable 39pts and was a +4. While the team would love to keep this veteran warrior, salary cap issues all but guarantee he will be bought out.
- Jay McClement (C) - Injuries and then the firesale in St. Louis this season allowed Jay more ice time than might have been expected. While typically a defensive forward his +/- was dissapointing but on the flipside his offensive contributions from the 3rd line were greater than expected in his first year.
- Curtis Brown (D) - The long time Red Wing captain had a year of on and off ice chalenges. Looking much older than his 30 years Curtis now finds himself on the bubble and may well be traded this offseason.
- Matt Ellison (C) - was making respectable contributions in Chicago before being traded to Philly where depth resulted in him being relegated to the minors.
- Ben Ondrus (D+) - full marks for the high energy game he brings but 0 pouints and -9 in 21 games?

Top D pairing Lidstrom (A+) - Warrener (C+)
Lidstrom - He's baaack
Warrener - The stay at home dman had his usually steady if unspectacular season, the type of player that brings the intangibles that aren't reflected in pure stats.

2nd D pairing Van Ryn (B+) - Malik (A-)
- Van Ryn nearly matched his offensive production from last year and improved his defensive play such that he was tied for 2nd in +/-. With Sopel's decline Van Ryn gets a well deserved promotion to the 2nd pairing.
- Malik showed yet again that he is amongst the league's best defensive dmen. While Jagr and Lundqvist recieved well earned accolades only true Rangers fans noticed the relationship between Malik's two injuries and the two team slumps (Rangers only won 2 of the 9 games Malik was out).

3rd D pairing Sopel (C-) - Sarich (C-)
- Sopel suffered through his 2nd worst seasons in the pros recording only 28 points and was a -13. Hopefully he can rebound next year.
- Sarich - going into this season the team had had hopes that 05/06 would be a breakout year for Sarich but unfortunately he only muster 15pts and was a -1.

7th dman Denis Wideman (c-)
- Wideman - a powerplay specialist, Wideman started strong but faded in the 2nd half. Another year of experience will be required before being considered for full time duty.

The goalies Henrik Lundqvist (A+) and Antero Niitymaki (C+)
- Lundqvist despite playing for a team lacking depth on defence Lundqvist put up amazing numbers that included being in the top 3 for most of the season for GAA and sav%
- Niittymaki had a respectable 1st year with consistency being the biggest challenge. The team is confident that he will have an even better 2007/08.

On an interesting note, these goalies met in the finals of the Olympics with Lundqvist coming out on top and it now appears that Philly and NYR may meet in the first round of the playoffs. It's yet to be seen if Esche or Niittymaki will start in net for Philly.
