With Ekblad out, Florida will presumably be looking for a defenseman to keep them in the playoff picture. Ekblad is hard to replace but they will need to fill his minutes by committee or through another body.
Assuming they are seeking out a big-minute guy, you have to figure there are a few prime candidates out there:
- David Savard
- Alex Edler
- Josh Manson

Anyone else they could suddenly be in on?

If it's a pure rental they will probably want someone to fill as much of Ekblad's minutes as possible.
If it's someone they will retain for longer, they might consider someone who can slot into a wider variety of minutes and/or play both sides.

Travis Hamonic is on a really good contract insofar as rentals are concerned, but Canucks might be looking to re-sign him

I think Elliotte Friedman mentioned on HNIC last night that Carolina had kicked the tires on Hamonic but he wasn't interested in leaving Western Canada this season.

Hamonic isn't waiving.

If the Canucks truly consider themselves 2 years away from competing and get a trade that blows them away, I could see Schmidt being on the table (would cost 1st + a solid prospect most likely).

If they get Ekholm they can slide Weegar into his natural RD spot and roll with Ekholm-Weegar... don't think that will be much of a drop off from having Ekblad there if they have good synergy.

Then when Ekblad comes back

Weegar-Ekblad
Ekholm-Stralman
Yandle-Gudas

Canucks:

1. Hamonic not waiving
2. Benn available - played very well this season. Good contract.
3. Edler probably won’t waive because he didn’t two years ago.
