According to hockey insider Chris Johnston, the MLSE board is finally willing to grant Kyle Dubas a contract extension after declining to do so last summer, but there’s a desire to wrap things up quickly. We’re talking as early as Tuesday or Wednesday, according to sources.

Without knowing the extent of his family situation – or being able to fully measure the human cost of investing everything he had into being Leafs GM – it seemed at least plausible that Dubas may be burnt out.

And if that’s the case, the 37-year-old should be granted the space and privacy needed to take care of matters far more important than chasing a Stanley Cup.

Except the challenge hanging over this particular situation is time.

While that makes logistical sense given the volume of looming decisions – making a determination on Sheldon Keefe and his coaching staff, finalizing draft preparations, working out a contract extension with Auston Matthews (and possibly William Nylander), exploring the market for core-altering trades – it’s going to be a tight turnaround for someone in the mindspace we saw Dubas display.

In the event he decides to walk away, as unfathomable as that seems, the Leafs would need to scramble quickly for a Plan B.

Perhaps it’s as simple as promoting assistant general manager Brandon Pridham, who has been with the organization since August 2014 as a salary cap specialist and has since added important responsibilities like taking the lead on contract negotiations. He’s a valued asset that would provide continuity and has been linked to the ongoing Calgary Flames GM search.

Many of the external candidates are well down the road in the process for other job openings, although one that isn’t – recently departed Flames GM Brad Treliving – would likely be of strong interest.

Again, though, we are only a little more than six weeks out from the start of free agency. The timing won’t allow for a comprehensive search.

Notably, Leafs president Brendan Shanahan elected not to join Dubas for Monday’s year-end media availability, which is a significant departure from past practice. Shanahan will speak in the coming days, according to Leafs PR.

Dubas resume does not fit the flames needs at all. He just hires ex coaches and signs ex players from his junior glory days, and they're all on their way out with him if he goes. Im just not sure if the CGY roster is as "cup or bust" as the leafs roster is.

However, if the owners are pushing for the a playoff team/retool, which they almost certainly are, he would actually be a good fit. His trade deadline moves have been creative and directly served team needs. He also put together decent role players that can elevate their games with good linemates, which the flames need.

Just get someone who commands some leaguewide respect to commence the firesale. Too many expiring contracts to realistically try to assemble a good team for the next 3 years

Haven’t heard back yet from Flames about my application. My cover letter said I wouldn’t have made the Hamonic trade, or signed James Neal, would have kept Sam Bennett and would have signed Matthew long term after his ELC. I’m expecting to hear back before the long weekend. Here’s to hoping!!!!

The problem I have with Conroy is that he might be too nice to do the hard thing at times and we don't need a GM like that. It's not incompetence I fear, it's misguided loyalty. Other than that, he should know enough by now to be pretty good.
I’ll play devils advocate here, a lot of players after signing contracts here have spoken at length about how Treliving treated them being a big factor in their decision to sign with our organization. Moving on to another GM great at developing personal relationships could help a lot in retaining talent/bringing in new players.

I also believe Calgary definitely shouldn’t be the team that promotes Mitch Love though so what do I know.

Why is that?
Two reasons mostly. Coach of the year awards are mostly won by top notch goaltending performances, and Mitch Love had only ever had goalie of the year performances by Dustin Wolf during his tenure. Our AHL team also mirrors our parent NHL teams system to help familiarize prospects with our style, and he has only ever coached under Sutter’s extremely effective system (when it has the personnel and talent to make it work, which our AHL team has in spades).

I’m just weary that Mitch Love is riding the coat tails of Dustin Wolf and Sutter’s system. It seems apparent by this teams struggles to convert regular season dominance into playoff dominance that he might be being out coached at the AHL level, before even entering the NHL environment.

I'd also like to see Mitch Love coach a season without Wolf. I haven't seen any Wranglers games and a great goalie/team can cover a lot of flaws.

Dallas Eakins was once a highly regarded coach for his AHL record. Nobody with sense would hire him now.

Follow up here - I had my phone interview with Mr Maloney this morning. He went through my application and notably commented on my cover letter. He said Hamonic did great things in the community, that they won the Lucic-Neal trade and that they would have lost Bennett in the expansion draft anyways. We then talked about the Tkachuk trade and I said I would have went with the Carolina package as Necas looked really good this season. Mr Maloney seemed to get defensive and blurted out - “ well Tkachuk wouldn’t have made a difference for Carolina last night”……a long period of uncomfortable phone silence resulted after that comment and then he thanked me for my time and said someone named Trudy (or maybe it was Judy, idk) would be in touch to advise me of next steps in the process.

I actually agree with you here. I haven't seen a tonne of Wranglers games but I've probably seen 15-20 total over the past 2 years and they seem a lot more like a team that's just out-talenting (Wolf is the best goalie in the AHL, Phillips the best forward and they have a bunch of other good forwards) others than one that's really well structured and coached. They're dreadful defensively on a regular basis.

I wouldn't hate a Love promotion to see if he could integrate some of the AHL players but I don't think the Flames are sitting on the next Cooper/Bedard tbh.

I’d be pretty curious to see how Love would do next year if Pelletier and Wolf graduate, and Phillips moves on/he doesn’t get Coronato’s help. Not having 3 of the biggest talents the AHL has to offer at his disposal, especially one of the best goalies the leagues ever saw, would be a greater challenge for him and a better indicator of his talents. If the team is still one of the top teams in the league after that I’ll be fully convinced he could be a great NHL coach.

I also think Calgary needs to get away from Sutter’s style of hockey and there’s a big enough chance that Love would just continue on with his rendition of the same system since it’s given him success in the AHL. Our forecheck is still one of the best in the league but our team isn’t built for the slow, deliberate, mistake free transition and our man to man defense was atrocious to watch last year, pretty much every breakdown seemed like an issue with players missing switches. Think it’s time we get a coach that lets us open up the game now that we can finally roll 3/4 lines with offensive weapons, and there are a litany of options waiting for jobs right now in Boudreau, Gallant, Brunette etc. This team has 5 forwards who have paced for 30 goals in the last two years, 3 more forwards capable of ~20, and 3 defenseman with top 30 point finishes in the last 2 years. Our offense should be relentless.

We talk forever and constantly about player trades in the NHL and whenever we want to get whimsical, we even talk about swapping coaches. In a roundabout way, that happened this past offseason — a three-way exchange that saw Jim Montgomery go from Dallas to Boston, Bruce Cassidy from Boston to Vegas, and Peter DeBoer from Vegas to Dallas. Cassidy’s and DeBoer’s teams face off in the Western Conference final beginning tonight, while Montgomery coached the Bruins to the most regular-season wins (65) in NHL history.

So, wins all around.

Which of course leads us to the next logical progression in the NHL trading game — a swap of general managers.

I’m pitching Kyle Dubas, former Maple Leafs GM, for Brad Treliving, former Flames’ GM in a one-for-one deal.

And before you jump to the comments to explain why that wouldn’t, couldn’t or shouldn’t happen, hear me out.

Treliving, if you’ll recall, mutually parted ways with the Calgary Flames soon after their regular season ended in disappointment. They missed the playoffs with 93 points, never quite getting untracked after the significant offseason personnel changes they made, which were largely set in motion when Matthew Tkachuk forced a trade out of Calgary and Johnny Gaudreau left as an unrestricted free agent.

...........

When the Flames began the search for Treliving’s replacement, Don Maloney — the new president of hockey operations and the interim general manager — said he was looking for a bright young voice to run the team. It almost seems as if the job he was describing perfectly squared with Dubas’ resume.

If Dubas needs some time away from the game to recharge his batteries, there is nothing to prevent Maloney from carrying on as interim GM through the rest of the offseason. He has enough experience, from his previous jobs in Arizona and with the Islanders, to handle the duties on a short-term basis.

Maloney was adamant, whenever he spoke about this hire, that the important thing was to make the right choice, even if the search took them deep into the summer. If they’re not prepared to turn the reins over to Craig Conroy, who seems like the logical internal candidate, then they can carry on with the current iteration of the front office through the draft and into free agency.

I know Dubas is a polarizing figure in Toronto, but the reality is, other than trying too hard to sign John Tavares when he ultimately needed that salary-cap space down the road, he has a lot more wins than losses on his decision-making report card.

Are Nonis, Bergevin, & Bowman there to make Conroy look better by default or are they just the new Feaster's aka complete frauds that will just do whatever Murray Edwards want them to do?
