Um we buy Bob out after year 5 when Spencer is due for an extension? Really not ground breaking at all. Spencer signed because Bob does absolutely 0 to block his path.

That wouldn't help much.

Fortunately almost every goalie goes ELC>Bridge>Long-term, so there will only be a year or two of high AAV overlap.

Theyll pay ~6.666per year to have him not play? That’s a ~3.333 savings in a likely still flat cap..... your prediction is 3 years away and flat cap is expected for “next few years for sure”
Even if that happens where is there no incentive for him to sign? You think he’d rather wait two more years to sign an entry level deal with another team and wait another 3 years after that to get a bigger deal. Spencer made the best choice on the table. It’s actually a simple decision.

And then Bob is gone already. So I’m not getting your point. Spencer moves in as the franchise goalie by 23.

So I think this burns a year because he will be 20 by September 15th 2021 correct?

If the contract starts in 2020-21 then yes. Last I looked hadn’t seen an official confirmation yet that it is actually for 2020-21 rather then 2021-22.

Edit: confirmed now it starts in 2020-21.

Bob’s buyout after year 5 is 6.67 mil for 2 years and 1.67 mil for 2 years after that. If the year after 6.67 for 1 year and 1.67 for one. Not out of the realm of possibilities.

Surprised he signed. Bob is locked in long term at big money. Not looking like a financially promising future. Bob makes 10, how much more can a team really pay for goaltending

He’s about 5-6 years away from being paid.
Best case scenario

This whole Knight/Bobrovsky thing has been overblown since the day Knight was drafted. Everyone was sure of a hypothetical future problem that he wouldn't sign and now he did. Now, everyone is sure of another hypothetical future problem about playing time/contracts. It'll get sorted out, I don't understand what the big deal is. It'll be a good problem to have if somehow Knight earns a big pay day coming off his ELC (which is extremely unlikely at this point).

I expect him to spend a lot of time in the AHL, Hart is showing that it isn't necessarily easy for goalers to go through development without any sleeping policeman incidences.

Knight is not gonna be the starter right away. At most, Bob will be an extremely overpaid backup for 2 years. It's not the ideal situation for sure, but its hardly unmanageable. Once Knight's elc is over, Bob will be gone.

I read somewhere that he already burned 1 year of ELC by playing 1 game. Didn't they say before the season that you have to play 6 or 7 games this season to burn 1 year of ELC?

It's different for college players. Also, it was part of his signing demands.

It depends on the player's Signing Age. Age 18 and 19 players need to play 10 NHL Games (prorated this season to 7) to burn a season. While age 20+ players burn a season regardless of the # of games.

Spencer Knight's ELC signing age is considered Age 20.

Knight was technically signed before his 20th birthday on April 19th. However when signing a Entry Level Contract they go by what the player's age will be on Sep 15th (for age 18 or 19) or Dec 31st (age 20+). With the caveat that players signed midseason who turn 20 between Sep 15th and Dec 31st are considered age 20.

I'm really not worried about the Bob-Knight situation, and I'm also not worried about the NMC/NTC that Bob has.

Best case scenario for Knight's development would be:
2021-22: AHL Starter/NHL Backup
2022-23: Platoon with Bob
2023-24: Takes Bob's job

By that point, Bob would only have 2 more years left on his contract, and I don't even think we'd need to buy him out. Goalie trade clauses aren't the same hurdle that skater clauses are. Netminders want to play. If by 2023-24 Knight has completely supplanted Bobrovsky, and Bob is only gonna get like 25 starts per season maximum, history indicates that the veteran will gladly waive to go somewhere where'd he actually get games.

Unless Bob has completely fallen off a cliff, if he's still good enough to be a platoon goalie, then we can retain 50% on the the final two years and send him to whichever team needs a veteran platoon goalie at 5m (when the cap will be like 95m+).

Eating 5m for two years makes a hell of a lot more sense than eating 6.66m for two years and then another pair at 1.6m.
