Ok so he comes over. Looks weak and overmatched in training camp/preseason, we dont even consdier letting him adjust to the NA rink in grand rapids for twenty games? Hes just automatically pencilled in when hes already missed a tonne of training time the past couple years?

Where has he looked weak? I see the kid taking hits in the corners to make plays every single Skelleftea game. Every time Rogle and Skelleftea are playing the kid is mixing it up with Seider. He's only 5'11" but he's not a weakling at 5'11". He's also going to be 21 in June, FFS.

The guy is a playmaking winger with above average to excellent passing, skating and stickhandling ability at the NHL level. The 2 areas where he looks average are his shooting, and his defensive play. These are things that can be improved on.

If he looks overmatched then yeah, he goes to GR. But let him prove it. Berggren immediately makes our top 6 much more dangerous. Berggren has the kind of speed to play with Larkin and the kind of vision and passing ability to manufacture scoring chances in transition with him.

Kid not looking to strong beyond the paywall, you peasants aren't missing much.

He was showing us "highlight" tape from a bunch of different games he's watched. This kid seems to get away with a lot of mistakes because he can skate really fast and there's a lot of room on European ice. What's worse is he's a peripheral player on the Euro sheet too. For so called highlight reels he was bobbling the puck off a pass half the time too.

Long shot to be an impact player at AHL level IMO.

Genuinely surprised at the enthusiasm with him.

His year in juniors during 2020 Wallinder looked like a world beater.

Keep in mind that Wallinder has never played a truly structured game before Modo so the hockey game plan stuff is something he’s got a lot of catching up to do.

The raw talent is there. Let’s hope that the X’s and O’s improve.

For where we picked Wallinder there was only one other guy I was hoping for in JJ Peterka. It may take longer for us to see what Wallinder becomes between these two players but that’s ok. And if we’re still uncertain about Wallinder moving forward then we use him as a trade chip

Looks at this stage like a bigger Swedish Brendan Smith. Great at skating with the puck. Great size. Uncertain in his own end. Sometimes tries to do too much. High ceiling / low floor between games.

What enthusiasm though? It sounds like most people on here have chosen to dislike the pick. As for the article, it's a series about players with upside and Wallinder certainly has tools that fit the category.

I have only seen 2 games from him this season, and he looked like a 18 year old d-man with some obvious strengths and potential but also flaws that were highlighted when playing among men. In juniors, he was quite dominant. He also played on a horrible team but despite the average performance most top SHL clubs wanted to recruit him for next season. He also would have likely made the WJC roster if not for Covid.

Three more years of player rights, and there's a good reason why that period was extended. I sort of understand strong views on guys who have basically never shown much of anything, but a consensus 1st round pick from 6 months ago?

100% agree.
All the injuries that kept him out of playing didn't stop him from working out and getting stronger. Add another offseason and I don't think he will physically have a problem playing next season.

He's an 18 year old defenseman, a 2nd round pick, and playing his first full season in a pro league.

What the hell were you guys expecting?

I think when Hakan says he sees "some Hedman-like abilities" (paraphrasing) it's hard for some to not run with it. And so contrary to that, others are watching and feeling like, "There's nothing to see here."

Outside of Seider, there's not a Wings' prospect in Sweden who's a lock to start in Detroit next year.
Player - Odds of starting in Detroit
Seider- 90 percent
Veleno - 60 percent
Berggren - 40 percent
Raymond - 25 percent
Johansson - 15 percent
Soderblom - 2 percent
Grewe - 1 percent
Setkov - 1 percent
Berglund - 0 percent
Braatstrom - 0 percent (in Finland)
Niederbach - 0 percent
Wallinder - 0 percent
Eliasson - 0 percent (not even in Sweden)

Veleno over Berggren because of so much NA experience.

Johansson +3 today, was on the ice for all 4 Färjestad goals (1 on the PP). No points though. One game left in Färjestad's season.
