That contract is f***ing horrendous. Lmao, nice work, Holland. So much for master negotiator. I really don’t see Nurse being able to live up to this signing

In the presser did Holland go through all the numbers between 75 and 81 and then walk us through basic arithmetic

It's a clear overpay, but because the dollar figure is so high it makes it seem like a more egregious overpay than it is. So, yeah. Too much money, but not of the "sky is falling" variety.

...and I wonder if this wasn't an early down payment on trying to get 97 and/or 29 to re-up in a few years.

Nuge and McDavid did and Draisaitl while he didn't at the time, his contract is now an absolute steal. Honestly, I really do think the market really screwed things up allowing Nurse to ask for much more than he was probably originally asking for. Holland was backed into a corner and really had no choice as he couldn't let him leave. Yes, it is a stupid amount of money but that's the market and it is what it is.
How do you justify the highest paid player in the league as "taking a discount?" Like yes he's currently the best player but that doesnt mean hes on a team friendly deal, especially when the closest player to him skill wise is making almost half

Nurse in an interview said they were looking at a 4 year deal until the recent defense signings.

So, thanks Chicago. That deal set the market.

In another universe if Edmonton doesn’t trade for Kieth then Chicago doesn’t have the cap space for 1 of Jones or Fleury, they also don’t have the sweetener of getting Jones brother.

Darnell basically said I'm his press conference the number was a direct result of the Jones and Werenski contracts.

Hollands hands were tied and couldnt have him walk for nothing.
He's got another year to negotiate and allow other defensemen to set a new market lol

It's one thing if nobody is taking discounts but are the other core guys going to be fine with this?

Unless 9.25 represents a discount for DN, what was the point of CM and RNH taking team-friendly deals?

Why would others bother to in the future?

...blame the Rangers for signing a 2nd Pairing guy like Trouba to an $8 x 8 deal and Benning upping the ante in Vancouver by signing a 3rd Pairing guy like Myers to a $6 x 5 deal...these things always play out in cycles...Hell, go back to Bargain Bin paying Subban $9 mill...

Nurse is a very driven and hard working player, it will be interesting to see what his peak will be as a player.
We saw it last year lol. He's not gonna replicate that shooting percentage again and the chances of McDavid doing 2ppg pace against other better defensice teams in the league is outrageous.
