Yin trading fowler....I don't think many seem yo grasp this....

Anaheim would like to trade Fowler/Despres for an expansion draft exempt Dman or a top 6 young forward who is exempt or would be protected by Anaheim.

The problem is the trading partner in acquire Fowler now is put into this dilemma of having to protect 4 Dman thus exposing 3 more forwards or tusk losing the 4th Dman for nothing.

There are only about 3-5 teams who have could fit him in where the have a clear top 3 or they can go 4 Dman and 4 forwards. Other teams you may say fowler is better than their number 3 but their current number 3 is likely 21-23 and under team control for more than 2 years.

This fact needs to be a factor in any trade proposal.

The other factor is 2 yrs till UFA so to keep him will likely be costing $7M...who has such cap space?

Teams on the other side know this so they are likely low balling too.

Anaheim has no particular need for a draft-exempt d-man as a return.

There are only about 3-5 teams who have could fit him in where the have a clear top 3 or they can go 4 Dman and 4 forwards. Other teams you may say fowler is better than their number 3 but their current number 3 is likely 21-23 and under team control for more than 2 years.
Is that really all that "likely"?

If Fowler is a guy valued at $7M, which would see him tied with Doughty in the league's top-8 for cap hits on defenders, then teams wouldn't be lowballing, they would be stumbling over one another to get him.

You're trying to have it both ways. Either he isn't enough of an upgrade over what teams have to protect, at which point the market would see him commanding a very average salary for a defenseman, or the struggles to re-sign him in two full years are so big that teams rather pass on the chance to acquire a player good enough to command such money.

What's your opinion of the Wings being able to make a trade for Fowler, and take back more cap dollars than they send out? Will Holland do that? Or will he have to send a salary dump with Tatar to make the cap dollars even?

Yeah like Henkka stated, Most likely we would need a 3rd party maybe Buffalo or Winnipeg to take Brendan Smith off our hands. Seeing that we need to shed about $4.2 million to be cap compliant i could see him as trade bait. Doubt he has a future with Detroit any ways after this year and that would shed $2.75 million right there. It's sounding more and more according to one of our beat writers Ansar Khan that we wont be trading for a D-man right now. He thinks that we will just go with Ouellet as our #7 D-man and call it a day. Have a feeling that he's right.
