After being sellers they have already put up that giant neon sign. That's why keeping Markstrom makes 0 sense. They already lost the room & have for years. It started with Gaudreau, then Tkachuk. Now look at what they sold this year. At this point they would be wise to just go close up shop.

The fact Markstrom got so pissed off to the point he's talking bad about your management to the media. It's safe to say the room is lost. Do you not think him & the boys are all talking crap behind the scenes on how terrible things are? Your management dropped the ball big time. Rule #1 is never piss off a player because it will spread like wildfire in that locker room. Whatever he says to the media is very tame compared to what's being said behind closed doors.

It's more complicated than that. They only sold off the expiring vet contracts. With those guys you have 3 choices: let them walk for nothing, give into their contract demands, or trade them.
It made sense to trade them. The flames also took back roster players.
The plan isn't a full rebuild, it's a retool. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Flames sign a dman in the off season. It seems insane, but with all the guys like Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, etc ready to step up, they may come out with a better team plus all the picks.
A lot of what happens will depend on markstrom in the off season. He seems to like the playing in Calgary though.
I always pictured a retool being used for teams with elite players already there. Who you just need to change a few parts around them.
For example the Bruins have changed a bunch of players, but they have had their core players for years.
The Flames are in need of a full rebuild. But ownership will not allow it.
