Speculation: Dreger: Devils/Flames had a tentative deal in place for Markstrom, Flames ownership said no

This was hinted by Darren Dreger on Flames Barn Burner today.

He said there is a tentative trade in place, Devils and Conroy have agreed to a trade. But Flames upper management and ownership had said no over the past couple days.

The ownership believes the Flames are in a prime spot to make a playoff run, and don't want to part with Markstrom and give up on the season. Conroy has spent the last couple days trying to convince ownership that the Flames should trade Markstrom for assets.

This is crazy to me, because the Flames are 8 points out of a playoff spot and just traded 2 key pieces out.
That playoff revenue can do strange things to owners

What's funny about sitting your primary trade asset when you're a seller at the deadline?
Probably the fact that they went from a buyer position to a seller position in less than a week. Maybe I'm crazy though.

Conroy should resign. Ownership can’t be trying to make the player personnel decisions. No GM can work with those constraints.

Every Habs fan must be happy about what's going on in CGY

Team won't bad bad enough to tank and finish bottom 10. Habs could get a pick between 11-15 easilly

Not playing that game after Florida spend half the season in the bottom 10 and then went to the cup final. What happens happens.

lol I’m too lazy to dig in my post history but I said Edwards killed the deal when all the smoke was going. I thought it was over retention, not making a playoff run. Yikes

This is a total dick move to the entire Flames fan base. The only way the Flames will put an end to all this nonsense is if they stop going to the games.

Unless home game attendance numbers drop significantly Edwards will just keep continuing being the extreme narcissist that he is because nobody has stood up to this guy.

Getting smoked by Tampa should help 'push' Calgary into moving anyone and everything.

Nah. The sell off is half done. Markstrom is gone in the offseason for less. Sharangovich, Mangipane, Kuzmenko, and Backlund will probably be gone by next deadline as well.
Markstrom barely kept them in the playoff race with a good top four. They are going to get smoked now and decrease his value.

I mean at the time when the makrstrom thing was supposedly a done deal, we were like 3 pts out, now we are 8 and lost an entire 2nd pair that we run 49/51 with our top pair. I can see Edwards wanting to push for playoffs back then, but hopefully he realizes that its probably not happening now.

Treliving resigned. It's tough though. He's a Flame through and through and there are only 32 seats. Who knows when you get another one. This organization will never win a cup with Edwards as the owner.

Edwards is a piece of garbage. He got rich screwing Albertans over with low royalty rates and insider deals. Then he moved to Switzerland to avoid taxation. They he asks taxpayers to pay for his new digs while he avoids all tax and his business value went up over a billion dollars. Then he avows socialism and blackballs Fleury. Good for thee but not for me at it's finest.

No, this was within the past 4 days. Since the Devils upped their offer or were more interested in Markstrom again.

So the Flames, who are 8 points out of a playoff spot, have an ownership that think they still have a shot at the playoffs and thus, don't want to trade their goaltender to a team whose management also think they have a shot at the playoffs and are ALSO 8 points out of the playoffs. Interesting. And Stupid.

I don't think either team has a shot at the playoffs honestly at this point. NJ has more of a shot at it than us because they are chasing a team that sold and didn't sell 2 top 4 D and a top 6 C, but neither are likely. NJ just is likely to make it next year and we have no chance.

I take it NJ's dreams of making this year's playoffs have gone the way of the dinosaur? If yes, and Tofolli is unwilling to re-sign with the Devils, its the smart move. I wonder what Fitz offered Tofolli to re-sign? He's been a very good player for your team.

The issue with him here was always term. We were offering 3 years, he wanted 6. Anyone who signs him for 6 years is dumb. If he wants 3 years then go for it.
