The probability is extremely low given the required coordination, the people who would need to keep quiet about it, the risk/reward ratio, the conflicting incentives, and the lack of anything close to resembling proof.

Billionaires are way too competitive with each other to favor one team over the other.

The Bedard lottery wasn't rigged, but pre-lottery, 91-92 (And 92-93) was rigged against the Sharks, as evidenced by how 92-93 went.

Recall the expansion Sharks didn't get the #1OA in 91 draft, the Lindros pick, because it wasn't fair to the worst team in the league (Nordiques). Then the Sharks are the worst team in 91-92, so they should have been the #1OA in 92 draft, right? Nope, because they wanted expansion teams Tampa and Ottawa to get #1 and #2, leaving the Sharks with #3.

That isn't even conspiracy theory, it's just fact that the Sharks were rigged out of #1 OA in 91 and 92. They should have had #1 OA in at least one of those drafts.

I read through that yesterday, thanks.

I didn't see the posting of the actual numbers from E&Y... or a link to those. I might have missed it I was kinda tired.
The article mentions they are made public. Each team will know their numbers and have a representative in the room.

No, it’s not rigged. But anyone that thinks that the vast majority of owners aren’t in it predominantly as a financial investment is naive. In other words I do believe most owners would sacrifice some competitiveness if it meant a few extra dollars in their pockets (hence the favorable expansion drafts for Seattle and Vegas).

It would be so much easier to "rig" a single game like that with questionable officiating because basically there's only one person who needs to put their neck on the line, not an entire organization (E&Y) which is already highly successful and has little to gain. One corrupt ref? Could easily be tempted by a payoff, and that would be much easier to execute.

I would call that unfair, not rigged. Also, can something even be an "open conspiracy"? That's a bit of an oxymoron...

Oh, yeah, that's great and all. I wanted the full list...

Poll could use a "not sure" option. That's where I am... I don't think it's rigged, but then I wouldn't put anything past humans.

Exactly! 91 and 92 drafts were totally rigged against the Sharks, and it's factual, not conspiracy theory. Calling it "unfair" is downplaying the screwjob the Sharks openly received from the NHL.
The Sharks knew that that was going to be the case going in. It was an unfair policy, but everyone knew what was going to happen. It's like going to a casino and claiming that the odds are stacked in favor of the house!

Just because they knew it, doesn't mean it wasn't BS. Unconscionable contracts and contracts of adhesion (just examples here) are more than simply "unfair."

But gambling is rigged to favor the house, and maybe this discussion is getting dragged down in semantic differences re: "rigged" vs "unfair", hence why I asked where the line is

true... on the surface, it'd be dumb to rig it but i also think it's dumb to not make it completely transparent... like what's the harm in actually letting each of the teams' reps (if not the public) see the actual ping pong balls going in, getting mixed up, and having a couple of em pop out

plus it'd be a fun little show like a price is right minigame, could be p entertaining with the right emcee... i nominate katt williams

You get to see the balls. I posted a video in one of the other threads before this one existed of the balls being placed into the machine etc, but it was not released live. I'd want to see the list of numbers published to the public.

I'd also prefer to see Jumbo host/MC that type of thing.

They do let team reps watch the ping pong balls. They publish the list of numbers for each team, it is very transparent. We just don’t see it on TV because it is boring so they don’t show it.

Why does nobody think the NBA lottery is rigged if they think the NHL is?

The numbers being made public (not only to teams or the rep of the teams, public) prior would cut waaaay down on the tiny piece of me that believes there's some slim chance it's rigged.
